Though often thought of one of the most recognisable voices in pop music today, Australian singer-songwriter Sia has in fact been making music for over two decades at this point, with her rise to the top being a long and difficult one. Sia's first solo efforts saw her initially as an indie pop performer in the early '00s with albums like Healing is Difficult and Colour the Small One, though by 2011 she began receiving far more mainstream popularity after her voice inadvertently featured on the David Guetta hit "Titanium", the success of which then spurred her on to release number one albums 1000 Forms of Fear and This Is Acting.
Aside from her generally quirky image and extensive songwriting credentials, Sia stands out largely because of her distinct voice. Her vocal approach revolves around her unusual melismatic phrases ("Lentil", "Soon We'll Be Found") and her soaring lower fifth octave belts ("Chandelier", "Elastic Heart", "Titanium"). In early career songs Sia often shied away from singing too high, although over time, Sia has displayed more comfort in her upper register, singing far more frequently in soft head voice. Her lower register too is a strong one, comfortably getting down to the lower third octave ("Little Black Sandals, "The Real Thing"). Though her unusual, Rihanna-esque tone and live voice cracks may be offputting to some, her vocal talents are certainly not to be understated, as Sia is frequently highlighted as one of the best voices of the '10s.
