{Vocal Analysis}I would personally categorise Fred Durst as a natural baritone, gauging from his fairly comfortable second octave lows and overall mid-range and lower register timbre. Possessing a rough, chesty belting register drawing influence from contemporary grunge, alternative metal and hip-hop vocalists, Durst sounded fairly passable in his belting comfort zone around F4-A4, with an aggressive tone suited to his style of music. Beyond this, Durst's belting tended to become somewhat more nasal and shrill, with a lot of Limp Bizkit's tracks featuring inflections around the top of the fourth and early fifth octave, which is generally a feature of Durst's voice which has been criticised. Though he seldom departed from his belts in his upper register with any real melodic intent, Durst also like a number of alternative/nu metal vocalists made use of harsh screams in his upper register with reasonable control. Although his pitching in a live setting away from the grittier reaches of his voice has often been somewhat suspect, Durst's mid-range and lower register are not too bad, with some moments of passable soft singing and some solid enough second octave notes. Durst has also made a feature of rapping in his vocals. Overall, he is not an irredeemably poor singer, but with his share of mannerisms and bad habits that have made him synonymous with the more heavily scorned elements of his musical scene.
