Never afraid to stir up controversy to say what she believes in - whether it be from her provocative "Criminal" music video or her speech upon accepting her MTV Award - Fiona Apple 's music is marked by her percussive use of the piano, her rich vocal performances and her witty lyricism. Though she emerged as part of the '90s wave of alternative female singer-songwriters, Fiona's career trajectory could hardly be considered an orthodox one, especially compared to her contemporaries; she rose to fame after Tidal's release in 1996, but her strong dislike of the music industry has meant that she has only released five albums over her career spanning across three decades. Her output remains consistently excellent, however, and with her more recent albums epitomising the genius of her lyricism, she commands a loyal army of fans to this day.
As her roots lie deep in jazz music, Fiona's rich mezzo-soprano voice is clearly influenced greatly by the genre; she sings with silky smooth phrasing and controlled vibrato, particularly in her lower register. Her lower notes are remarkably strong, comfortable of confidently dipping down into the lower third octave, while her upper register - though used less consistently - contrasts between being beautifully soft in her head voice to being sharp and raw in her high belting. Although one may assume her voice is past its prime, in more recent years Fiona has explored her vocal range more than ever, pushing into her gritty upper chest register and her delicate head voice in live performances. Fiona's voice definitely has great control and skill, but it is how she uses it - as a tool for delivering her more emotive, passionate performances - that really makes it stand out.
