The insane lead guitar virtuoso for All That Remains who tragically passed away last year. Oli had an extensive background in music theory, composition, jazz guitar, and classical guitar which he utilized to help construct some of the most melodically memorable and inventive guitar solos in modern metal. Taking influences from such melodic shred heroes as Andy LaRocque, Jeff Waters, Alex Skolnick, and Criss Oliva it's evident that Herbert was more focused on enhancing the song with his lead playing as opposed to showing off. Technique wise, he's known for his expansive arpeggio vocabulary and legato chops, but isn't afraid to implement speed picking or carefully intonated slower lines in contrast to that. He also had a fondness for scale shapes such as Hungarian minor or at times even whole tone (see the Before the Damned solo) to give off an "outside" sort of tonality. R.I.P. Oli, may your abilities continue to inspire for many years to come!
No riffs list yet but I already know I'm going to be biased to the first two albums so if anyone else here by chance ever had a fondness for some ATR, I'd like to get a good rhythm guitar list together to honor the great work Oli did in that department.
