{Synopsis}By now recognised as a distinct and productive presence in the indie pop scene, Kimbra Johnson's itinerary from the start has been to combine a sort of Kate Bush-esque vibrancy with Amy Winehouse's darker pop sensibilities through her own distinctly synth-loving artistry. First breaking through with the billboard sensation "Somebody That I Used to Know", audiences got a taste of Kimbra's kind of elastic vocal tone, but perhaps weren't aptly prepared for the ventures of myriad harmonies and jumpy vocal performances that were to become a staple of her own music. Sporting a slightly ambiguous voice type, Kimbra's tone remains distinct through her tensile high notes down to her alluringly smokey lower register -- a subversion of the usual indie pop ethos favouring uniqueness over vocal proficiency. However, despite utilising a lot of range in most of her songs, Kimbra never feels as though she's showing off; seemingly content to be a unique singer by letting her emotive phrasing and complex arrangements do the talking. All things considered, Kimbra is a major influence in-the-making just at the cusp of a true classic, and she definitely has the wherewithal to provide the world with one in due time.
