Janelle Monáe is an American singer-songwriter. Though she is probably best known for her collaboration with fun. on number one single "We Are Young", she's certainly one of the best performers of the '10s, with her by-and-large conceptual discography focusing on her android persona and exploring a variety of genres including funk, R&B and soul music.
Janelle's vocal approach - characterised by her wild, raspy fifth octave belts, her resonant lower notes and her deliberate, quirky changes in inflection - is used characterfully within her music and her live performances. Probably best-described as a soprano because of how light her tone sounds generally, her voice is a versatile one - though used eccentrically within her own music, her covers of classics "As" and "Smile" showcase that Janelle's voice is talented enough to adapt to sing just about anything, regardless of genre or style. While some may find Janelle's voice verges on being slightly too OTT, there's no debate that as a singer, songwriter and live performer, she really gives her all into her performances.
