Her voice according to this post seldom surpassed D5. But then she has those impressive sixth-octave notes in “Just This One Time”. Then again though, soprano sfogato singing isn’t unheard of. Past D5 she’s more often mixing the few times she goes up there than full-belting it seems, and past Bb4 her voice begins to carry a bit of albeit palatable unsteadiness.  It's hard to say imo, I've always found it confusing.  That Eb3 from "All I Really Want to Do" is hella strong though.  But if she were truly a low-voiced female you'd think she'd have a more formidable and defined lower to mid third octave.  It's a very Grace Slick like voice, who also gets typed that way.  Those D3s from 2001 ("Più che puoi") are also very strong.  It seems more that she underuses those notes rather than fully lacking them.  But does that make her a contralto?  Perhaps, perhaps not...

Yeah. And it’s not in any way unheard of for a contralto to have really high notes available to them, whether by nature or work… just like for a tenor or baritone. I mean, Alison Moyet doesn’t even sing all that exclusively low and even has notes up to D6, and it would be pretty reductive to call her powerful voice only a mezzo — it would basically imply that a contralto ought to sound like Tom Jones. Cleo Laine (who Kaji considers a dramatic mezzo for most of her life) had crazy high notes that surpass those of most sopranos. Cher has much too chesty and thick a voice at full maturity to not be at least a… lower mezzo if not contralto.

I find that some contraltos can sound more feminine and lighter than others, and some are higher extended with weightier deliveries, and some are on both axes. I find the same for mezzos. Cher in the recent years does a lot of tricks with her tongue, soft palate, vowels and laryngeal position (eversince she started training with Seth Riggs) which mask her natural tone. While it is certainly a lower voice and a dark voice, to say she is darker and lower than a true lower mezzo (Fedora Barbieri in opera; Doris Akers or Melonie Daniels in contemporary) would be weird to me. Especially since both her chest and head registers audibly have a higher tessitura than all the singers I mentioned. Her voice is lower than most you'd typically hear in pop which may lead one to believe she is a genuine low female voice, which she's not.

Cleo was classified as a mezzo-soprano while in training and she has even performed classically in a few operas (Die lustige witwe for one) and was listed as a mezzo-soprano. All the roles she sang on operatic stage were soprano roles even though she was never one. Her training was in a soprano APPROACH as a mezzo-soprano (Ebe Stegnani in opera was quite similar; soprano technique as a mezzo-soprano). She only started calling herself a contralto in the recent years. 

Contraltos can absolutely have high notes of a mezzo or even soprano... or higher. The tessitura and tonal quality will simply differ. Same as tenor vs baritone. It's just a bit different. While actual contraltos are rare, those we know of have notes that are usable past the typical contralto range. Alison whom you mentioned is one of them. Low register timbre differences are a bit trickier as creating a very dark timbre at the very bottom of your range is less challenging than creating a naturally sounding ala-high voice timbre on the very top. 

Yeah, Toni is like a pushed-up mezzo to me. May have been a soprano in her younger years, but mezzo now for sure.

I've listened to Sonny & Cher tracks where i can't tell who's Sonny and who's Cher, so subjectively I'm more inclined to believe you're understating how low her voice actually is, more than I'm overstating. Wouldn't be that surprised to find lower mezzos have stronger lows than her, some baritones get out-lowed by tenors all the time *cough Zedd Squared cough*

I figure this Cher debate warrants a similar reaction to my Peter Steele thread post, but I guess a quick summation is that low voices are allowed to sound light sometimes folks (especially when compared to other low voices and in contemporary music in general, where subtle tonal variations are the norm).

If a female vocalist is easily mistaken for a male vocalist, it's probably not unreasonable to assume that the vocalist in question falls under the lowest female voice type.

Cher is an example, but Tracy Chapman, Nico and the vocalist who sang "Goodbye Horses" are maybe more extreme examples.

On the other hand, if a male vocalist can be mistaken for a female vocalist, (Lindsey Buckingham, Michael Jackson, John Denver) you're likely dealing with a higher tenor.

Mezzos with a darker tone still sound distinctly female, imo. I don't think Lana Del Rey or Lorde are often being mistaken for male vocalists.

See, I think style can also bring out lightness or darkness in a voice by the situation of the style’s needs. Pop singers sing in a higher larynx placement than operatic or even gospel singers generally.

Also I’ve never mistaken Nico’s voice as male. At lowest she’s probably a mezzo.

I do think that youth can also mask the depth of a voice, as younger voices sound brighter and lighter and more buoyant. Cher’s voice in her twenties already was adept well into the third octave, and very belty by the mid fourth. By her fifties she was doing pretty thorough lows down to the end of octave three, which is still quite low for a female pop singer. Her chest voice has always been weighty, and her head notes raspy and twanged.

I don’t think that Lana and Lorde are all that deep-set though. I think they mainly have ease and practice in singing that low. I’d agree that they’re mezzos though, just singing very modern-pop.

Nearly all Nico songs can be sung by a baritone in the original key. If she was a mezzo, she'd have quite an unusual vocal approach. On her earlier stuff she was told to sing with a lighter approach, I heard.

Do you agree that Cher is a contralto? Her voice seems darker and weightier compared to vocalists, who are considered lower mezzos such as the young Stevie Nicks and Fiona Apple. More androgynous.

While Lindsey, Michael and John have high and bright voices - their very bright timbre is largely caused by a habitually high resting laryngeal position and usually also a result of vocal imitation of female singers. And they still have the vocal density in their voice, even in lighter coordinations that's distinctly tenor (I don't really think Lindsey did, but the other two surely). The tessitura and passaggi are also that of a tenor voice if you delve deeper into their voices. 

You view... Lana and Lorde as... dark and low mezzos lol? I thought at least the former was universally called a soprano.  

I'll only be using singers that were classified by their teachers as mezzo-sopranos or even trained classically as such in this post after this sentence. The reason this is so that the classifications are not gonna be simply guesses.

Doris Akers was classified as a dramatic mezzo-soprano by her teacher (the same teacher also taught Mahalia Jackson) that sang fairly light and mostly belted. She was often mistaken for a tenor singer when singing. While she does have a distinctly feminine tone, tessitura audibly sits low and the voice is dark. She had no issues projecting her voice even close to the C3 without a microphone.

Although not someone who attended lessons consistently, Angela Lansbury was classified as a lyric mezzo-soprano by Marge Rivingston who coached her, and even did some opera work. She's famously the voice behind the original Beauty and the Beast song. Listen especially to the density of her voice, not how bright or dark it is.

Della Reese was a mezzo-soprano that eventually became a contralto (in the 1980s when she already mostly retired from recording music). She was trained in classical and contemporary by multiple singers but the notable ones were Mahalia Jackson whom I mentioned already (Mahalia always made sure to assign her students both classical and contemporary pieces) and another famous name that taught her was Billy Ward who taught another great name as well - Jackie Wilson. Billy's training was highly influential to Della's belting technique and tone. Once again, he assigned his students both classical and contemporary pieces but unlike with Mahalia, he assigned them pieces that were zwischenfach or even in travesti. Mahalia would often sing even male arias as training for her belting. She has spoken prior that she was a lyric soprano in her younger years, but I've not heard any recording that would point to that but in all fairness her oldest recording I have heard from her was from 1954, when she started her career 10 years earlier so who knows. But by the time she started recording she was a lower mezzo lightening her voice considerably. Examples of both her full singing and lighter singing as a mezzo:

And here is Della's voice after she became a contralto. Considerably more dense and richer. Much lower tessitura as well. And she is still a high contralto. She still kept some of her range. And the tone is not as dark as a natural contralto (she was originally a mezzo, she was not born a contralto) but it is still a good representation of the density of a contralto voice.

The last example is not only androgynous but masculine and that is a soprano. The way you utilise your instrument and shape your vocal tract in singing can produce a darker or brighter timbre than one'd expect from their voice type. Cher has a dark voice, no one can deny it. But if you listen to her voice with as little tonal manipulation (so a lot of her earlier records) you will not see a voice that has a lower tessitura than a low mezzo. And that is the most important aspect. Tessitura relative to the coordination used by the singer. Someone like Melonie Daniels, a low mezzo (became a contralto recently) has better high notes than the majority of sopranos and better low notes than a lot of tenors. Her tessitura will change depending on how she sings. Same goes with Cher. And the way she sings, and the tessitura in that approach is very much indicative of a mezzo voice, not a contralto voice.

Where did anyone say that? Overall vocal range doesn’t mean anything when discussing voice types. I mean there are sopranos with clear E2s (Toni Scruggs), and contraltos with effortless sixth octave as previously mentioned. Tessitura, density and timbre are what makes them those voice types.

Contralto tessitura and passaggi however are pretty much exact with that of a tenor in full voice though, so your question is a tricky one.

In a way, it’s arguable that Steve and Rod are, because of how effortlessly they cascade along the fourth and fifth octaves. They could be thought of as “male mezzos” even (high tenors with a pop mezzo tessitura). Bruno Mars could be thought of this way too, who doesn’t sing below B♭2 as far as we know, and frequently reaches D5. I mean, you put these against a Nina Simone or even an Alison Moyet and you see what I mean.

Nonetheless, I do think she’s a contralto. In fact, if they are “male mezzos” (“haute contre” I believe would be the equivalent opera term) it would further prove my point. Bruno Mars is hitting more D5s than Cher, and Steve & Rod more C5s, and all with similar or greater ease. Moreover the timbre is just so dark.

Where did anyone say that? Overall vocal range doesn’t mean anything when discussing voice types. I mean there are sopranos with clear E2s (Toni Scruggs), and contraltos with effortless sixth octave as previously mentioned. Tessitura, density and timbre are what makes them those voice types.

Contralto tessitura and passaggi however are pretty much exact with that of a tenor in full voice though, so your question is a tricky one.

Would you say, for example, Annie Lennox could be considered a contralto?
