{Synopsis}Despite inviting both the good and the bad aspects of being compared to his evident muse, Prince, it would be unfair to consider D'Angelo's résumé merely a projection of his influences. As one of the big four of neo-soul, along with Mary J. Blige, Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu, D'Angelo is himself a seminal influence in shaping R&B as we know it today; within the span of five years, his smooth, staccato vocal delivery and jazzy production were able to make a lasting impact on the genre for generations to come. By now an elder statesman of R&B, his voice having lowered and his sex symbol status deteriorated, D'Angelo's pure talent as a musician is more evident than ever. In spite of or perhaps even because of his unceremonious departure from the public eye before, D'Angelo successfully earned back his goodwill through sheer musicianship -- a move that helped reshape his image away from a sexy breakout star and solidify it as a respectable influence in its own right.
