{Synopsis}One of the original range conservatives in what we now know as the indie gospel, Hope Sandoval's intangible image has always been complemented by her resigned vocal delivery and seemingly intentional insistence on using as few notes in her vocal melodies as possible. Having started in the marginally edgier outfit Opal, Hope would only truly be discovered in the band's later reformation as Mazzy Star -- an outfit combining the serene poetry of The Doors with the misanthropy of The Velvet Underground, for which Hope's soothing, yet profoundly wistful, vocal inflections were the perfect vehicle. Because of her extreme introversion, Hope remains somewhat of a mystery to fans and indie adherents alike; an aesthetic that's since become a bit of a pastiche for artists in her lineage of dream pop who prefer to remain 'mysterious' to the outside world. In Hope's case, however, the music always speaks for itself and will assuredly keep Hope's legacy as among music's more grounded talents, providing a healthy contrast to the exhausting larger-than-life personalities dominating the social capital of the industry presently.
