{Vocal Summary}With one of the most remarkable ranges and voices on the planet, the Siren of Doom, Diamanda Galás represents condemnation, discrimination, persecution, torture, madness and oppression at its most vile through this immense instrument. Galás' possesses one of the most remarkable voices in the history of music. A trained opera singer, Galás has incredible support, breath control, immense projection, resonance and consistent tonality ranging right through from a dramatic contralto to a spinto soprano. An avant-garde performance artist, she has explored the extremes of her voice throughout her career through growls, whistle shrieks, cries of anguish, shouts, hisses and unsettling spoken word. Outside of her operatic quality, Galás' non-operatic voice has an almost witchy rasp to it. A strikingly low-placed singer, her control over her upper register truly is incredible in this respect.
Galás' body of work mostly consists of outside (like, way outside) the box interpretations of jazz and blues standards as well as macabre sound-collages and avant-garde performance pieces. She generally works with pieces that tell of the condemned and the oppressed and is a staunch supporter of victims of HIV/AIDS, historically performing a show at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in protest of the Catholic Church and their stance on the AIDS epidemic at the time. She is also a disciplined pianist and plays it as her primary accompanying instrument.
