Swans emerged from the chaos of New York's underground no-wave scene a destructive, industrial force intent on channeling nothing but pain. Eventually evolving into a far less abrasive, but no less harrowing gothic outfit and then dissolving after releasing their exhausting 2 and a half hour exercise in atmosphere extremity Soundtracks for the Blind, Swans returned once again in 2010 and went on to take the underground by storm with their monolithic The Seer. Possessing a disgustingly heavy baritone, Michael Gira's voice is undoubtedly the perfect match for Swans music. Reaching effortlessly down into the top of the 1st octave, Gira's voice summons misery and a foreboding sense of dread, even while singing about life. Gira has demonstrated very little melodic singing above A3 (though it does exist), with most of his highest notes being desperate shouting; his lower register sits as by far his strength. Not the most technically pleasing singer, though in saying this, he possesses a respectible amount of breath support, sustaining long shouted passages and weighty sustained notes at the bottom of the 2nd octave without an awful amount of sweat.
