Summary:
Buddy Guy has certainly left his mark on music over his decades-long career. Commonly cited as one of the legends of the blues, Guy has earned his accolades through his tireless musical efforts which have not dwindled since he started performing with bands in the 1950s. Even today he still plays more shows per year than some less than half his age, with no signs of slowing down. While he is more well known for his guitar playing expertise, his vocals are arguably equally as virtuosic. His voice has aged extremely well, with no signs of any loss of range or ability other than his voice lowering naturally, which given that he is now into his 80s, is most definitely an achievement.
Guy’s vocal style at the start of his career was based mostly around chesty fourth and fifth octave tmelodies. Over time these high notes have become steadily rarer, with Guy using his mid-range and occasionally his low range more often relatively early on. He favours chest voice over falsetto, though the latter is still used quite often. The influence that Guy has had on rock and blues music is huge, and can be clearly seen by the esteemed guitarists that he has inspired, and of course heard in the music he has made over the years. Just as impressive as his legacy, or perhaps even more so, is his dedication to his music over the years. Through thick and thin he has never stopped, never slowed down, and that, among many other things, is why he is considered a blues legend.
