Arguably Iceland's finest export, Björk Guðmundsdóttir - known mononymously as Björk - is an Icelandic singer-songwriter. She began her career as the lead singer of numerous punk bands, the most famous of which was The Sugarcubes, with single "Birthday" becoming popular. Björk then broke off on her own solo career, recording successful albums like the eclectic Debut, the immensely bold and beautiful Homogenic and the introverted, intimate Vespertine. A relentlessly creative force who consistently defies musical categorisation, Björk still stands today as one of the most groundbreaking influential musicians of all time.
Throughout her constant changes in direction, Björk's voice remains the most compelling feature of her music. Being a particularly light soprano, her voice could be highlighted as unusual for a number of reasons, with her Icelandic diction, her unusual phrasing and her ethereal tone making her voice stand out. Her singing typically stays within the fourth and fifth octaves; her upper register in particular is very strong, as Björk is capable of soaring, passionate belts ("Crying", "Human Behaviour", "Pagan Poetry") and blissful soft head voice notes ("The Anchor Song", "Birthday", "Cocoon"). Her lower register is weaker (sounding particularly dark as high as C4), though Björk usually tends to avoid singing particularly low anyway, placing more emphasis on her mid-range and higher notes. While in recent years nodules may have caused Björk to lose some of her iconic upper range, she nevertheless still stands out as an idiosyncratic icon, with her distinct voice frequently being held up as one of the greatest of all time.
