Associated Acts: Altamont (1983 - 1984), Karma (1983 - 1985), Porcupine Tree (1987 - 2010), No-Man (1987 - Present), Bass Communion (1994 - Present), Incredible Expanding Mindfuck (1996 - 2001), Blackfield (2001 - Present), Storm Corrosion (2010 - 2012)
Vocal Range: D2 - D5
{Vocal Summary}I awaken in a dimly lit room. As I slowly come to, I see pale spears of light creeping through drawn venetian blinds and onto a hard wood floor. More details build my picture of my surroundings the longer I look, shelves and shelves of... what look to be records, or comically thin books, covers the wall furthest from me. A gaudy turkish rug breaks up the wooden floor, pinned down by a desk topped by a massive interface of buttons and knobs. There is a man at the desk. He has not noticed I am awake yet, he remains hunched over a screen, absorbing the blue light through his bespectacled corneas. Cautiously, I try to shuffle away, get myself between him and a door on the other side of the room adjacent the bookshelf, but he senses the movement, flicks his long straight hair in my direction.
"It's finished, listen to this," his breathy lower register in use, almost spoken and not carrying a firm amount of resonance.
I bolt for the window, it's much closer and he'd be less likely to get in my way. I am devastated to discover it is barred.
"Such brilliant artistry here," he is playing music from the interface, a mixing desk, I realise. He sings along to it, a soft mezza-voce type tonality with a clearly defined flip between a somewhat limited chest register and a muted falsetto.
"What the fuck is this?" I ask, wishing he would turn this dinosaur ass prog off. I check my pockets. My phone! The fool has left my phone on me. I snatch it out, begin to dial the emergency services.
"You've got to put that down," he says
"Not a chance, you creep, I'm getting the hell out of here"
"But... phone bad," he reaches out to grab it.
Suddenly, there's a massive crash, two armed men crash through the door. I'm rescued, thank god. I rush over to the two men, but the push passed me and go for my abductor instead, checking him for injuries and seeking reassurance that he was alright.
"Mr. Wilson, has this man hurt you? We're officers ZeddSquared and RodneyRazorshorts with the paleontology society, we got word that a man was holding you hostage and forcing you to remaster old prog records, a process in which you excel."
Steven nodded, Steve to friends, fans, abductees, literally no one, no one calls him Steve, he looked pleadingly at his two knights in shining white armour.
"He... he... kept trying to make me reform Porcupine Tree," he began to sob, "I kept trying to tell him, my mission to save music was too important, that I have to go solo now, and almost but not quite make listenable pop music."
The two men looked at each other, shaking their heads in disbelief, then at me.
"Mana, you're going away for a long time,"
That's when I realised. Steven Wilson, the patron saint of prog music, wasn't holding me hostage. No, it was me who was keeping him.
Wilson spoke up again, having recovered his composure.
"I keep trying to tell him, just listen to a Pink Floyd record, they already wrote every Porcupine Tree song decades ago,"
"Well, he's going to have plenty of time for that where he's going," said one of the men, an attractive, meaty hunk, and he walked towards me with a pair of cuffs.
"No! you can't take me away from him, I love him! I'd do anything for him!" I pleaded.
"Then let him go, Porcupine Tree are never coming back," one of the long, tan and handsome men said.
"Never!"
Then like 6 cops bust in and shot me lol.
