{Vocal Summary}
TOMOMI, affectionately nicknamed TOMO, TOMO-chan or Timo, is the bassist and secondary vocalist of the alternative rock (mainly but not only) band from Osaka, “SCANDAL”. Like her bandmates, she attended the dance and vocal training school “Caless”, where the staff put her together with HARUNA, MAMI, and RINA to form an all-girl band at the request of Kitty Rights & Entertainment. The quartet formed SCANDAL, and self-taught themselves. Praising self-acceptance and gender equality, SCANDAL started with a striking contrast of school uniforms (which they dropped in 2011) and garage rock, playing (sometimes for no one) in the park of the Osaka Castle Hall, their 13,000-seat dream venue that they achieved in 2013 with a concert that sold out in five minutes. They have gained a progressive emancipation on songwriting that they longed for since their start, as well as popularity and well-earned respect to play at festivals in Japan, and to be invited to play concerts and events around the world. With all of their 10 studio albums having ranked in the top 5 spots of the Oricon weekly sales charts, they are still a major reference, influence and trigger for the current generation of all-girl bands in Japan, where male-fronted rock bands dominate the scene.
TOMOMI was the main band’s lyricist up to the band’s sixth album HELLO WORLD, after which she experienced what she has described as a “slump”, and couldn’t come up with lyrics (“Mado wa Aketara”, fully written by her, is about that period). She also occasionally writes the music for songs (“Prism”, “Kan Biiru”), and is frequently the second lead vocalist in the band, sharing lead vocals with HARUNA for a few lines or even full verses, and often sings in unison with her bandmate (explaining why some notes in her vocal range thread aren’t considered back vocals), with the chorus of “Bright” being a perfect example. Although “Mabataki” is a recent instance of dual lead vocals, it was mostly prevalent on the band’s first albums.
TOMOMI has a high-placed and rather nasal voice that is one of a soprano, with easier access to the entire fifth octave. It wasn’t until towards the release of SCANDAL’s second album TEMPTATION BOX that she started appreciating her voice, which usually surprises newcomers, and started sounding noticeably more natural and comfortable both in the studio and on stage. Described as the funny one in the band, TOMO is a very expressive vocalist, with several, often sustained, melodic falsetto shouts mostly during live performances. The most iconic example of this is the long F♯6 in “STANDARD” (which she also does in the studio version of the song), and it explains her recurrent access to most of the sixth octave. She also happens to have an extensive mix register reaching the bottom sixth octave, which can notably be heard in backing vocals of “Sunny Day Sunday”, as well as occasional powerful belted notes. She’s also diligent when it comes to her lower register, as demonstrated in “LIFE IS A JOURNEY”. TOMOMI has a joyful voice which, despite being naturally very sweet and smooth (showcased in the recent “Ai no Shoutai”), can sometimes get a bit raspy in the upper fourth octave and bottom fifth octave mostly with more open notes. This does not come from a lack of technique, but instead is a simple quirk of her voice.
She and her bandmates tested positive for COVID-19 in the middle of the band’s July 2022 North American tour and forced SCANDAL to cancel the rest of the dates, causing her to have a more noticeable rasp on certain sustained notes during live performances in the following months. However, her voice continues to remain in a great state. Since SCANDAL’s ninth album Kiss from the darkness, TOMOMI has shown even more presence as a lyricist, songwriter, and both as a lead and backing vocalist. A bright future lies ahead for more chances to hear her polishing her singing and tone.
