{Vocal Summary}
RINA, affectionately nicknamed RINA-chan, Rinari or Rinax, is the drummer and occasional vocalist of the alternative rock (mainly but not only) band from Osaka, “SCANDAL”. Like her bandmates, she attended the dance and vocal training school “Caless”, where the staff put her together with HARUNA, MAMI, and TOMOMI to form an all-girl band at the request of Kitty Rights & Entertainment. The quartet formed SCANDAL, and self-taught themselves. Praising self-acceptance and gender equality, SCANDAL started with a striking contrast of school uniforms (which they dropped in 2011) and garage rock, playing (sometimes for no one) in the park of the Osaka Castle Hall, their 13,000-seat dream venue that they achieved in 2013 with a concert that sold out in five minutes. They have gained a progressive emancipation on songwriting that they longed for since their start, as well as popularity and well-earned respect to play at festivals in Japan, and to be invited to play concerts and events around the world. With all of their 10 studio albums having ranked in the top 5 spots of the Oricon weekly sales charts, they are still a major reference, influence and trigger for the current generation of all-girl bands in Japan, where male-fronted rock bands dominate the scene.
RINA has been the band’s main lyricist for several years now, and also occasionally writes the music for songs (“Ao no Naru Yoru no Sukima de”, “Bitter Chocolate”). Her vocal appearances are fairly rare, her backing vocals are often buried in the mix, and there are only a handful instances of her singing lead vocals solo (“Midnight City”). She also sings lead vocals for a line or two in a few songs.
The first distinction of RINA’s voice is how light it is, with her live vocals usually requiring a backing track in order to double them and hear her better. She has a fairly high-placed soprano voice, about as much as TOMOMI’s when singing, though her spoken voice isn’t as high-placed. She will casually speak in the same third octave range as HARUNA’s (usually dropping between F♯3 and E♭3), rather than TOMOMI’s (which is usually more in the upper third octave). This observation, and the fact that her lowest recorded notes (mostly in “Kanojo wa Wave”) are fairly solid, presumably meaning that she has a lower register waiting to be explored in future vocal lines. “Oyasumi”, the first song featuring RINA on lead vocals on a SCANDAL album, unveils where her voice shines the most (with a recurrent C5): The bottom fifth octave. While she usually stays in her comfortable range on studio songs, her live singing, though brief and often for non-melodic notes, showcases her easy access to the mid fifth octave that she can comfortably sustain and belt rather powerfully, despite her naturally discreet voice. There are also a few instances of her still being in mix in the upper fifth and bottom sixth octave. She and her bandmates tested positive for COVID-19 in the middle of the band’s July 2022 North American tour and forced SCANDAL to cancel the rest of the dates, but with her singing parts being fairly rare and not particularly demanding, it did not seem to cause her to struggle during live performances in the following months. RINA’s confidence as an artist will hopefully lead to more frequent singing parts both in the studio and during live performances.

I would like to thank sylvia!! for guiding me through my first threads (layout, BBCode, hesitation on a couple of questionable notes), thoseguiltyeyes from SCANDAL HEAVEN for correcting and making my vocal summary texts more flowing, and Vadrith (a SCANDAL fan) for clearing my doubts on who sang a handful of notes!
