{Detailed bio}
The unforgettably charismatic and insanely energetic frontman of Van Halen, David Lee Roth is someone who is known by many not for having a spectacular voice or incredible singing abilities, but for the sheer insanity of his musical presence, and the unmatched levels of hyper manicness that he brings to many of his performances. While some regard him as a rather subpar singer from a technical standpoint, they might be surprised to discover that he has developed a shockingly extensive vocal range over the years, with both his high range and low range increasingly significantly from the '90s onward. He is perhaps one of the most unexpected cases of a vocalist with a large range, as he lacks the tonal expressiveness and power that most such singers have in their high ranges. Nonetheless, he's made for quite an interesting choice of a notewatching project, especially considering how much he's shown off his range on his last few albums!
Roth first began his career with Van Halen (at the time called Mammoth) in 1974, though the story goes that he had previously auditioned for the band and been rejected at the time. Allegedly the story goes that guitarist Eddie Van Halen let him into the band because they had been renting a sound system from him, but realized that it would be cheaper to just let him join the band and use the sound system for free. And so the classic era of Van Halen was born, with Alex Van Halen on drums and Michael Anthony on bass and backing vocals. For the first few years of their career, Van Halen played bars and clubs around the Pasadena, California area, initially playing sets exclusively comprised of covers of other popular '70s rock artists. As they became more established around the music scene, they began to write originals together, some of which would become world-famous tunes on their eventual albums later on. In 1976, the band was discovered by Gene Simmons of Kiss, who produced their first demo, though this was ultimately rejected by Kiss' management, who did not expect them to be successful. A year later, however, Van Halen managed to land a record deal, which led to the recording of their first album - a now-famous 1978 self-titled.
Over the course of the next seven years, Van Halen skyrocketed to fame - quickly gaining the reputation of "the ultimate party band", and frequently touring and recording new music. Following their debut, they released five more albums with their original lineup - 1979's Van Halen II, 1980's Women and Children First, 1981's Fair Warning, 1982's Diver Down, and finally the greatly acclaimed 1984 (released that same year). For much of Van Halen's early career, Roth's vocal range was indeed more limited than the typical rock singer's, as he lacked any sort of developed fifth octave, and instead resorted to doing a rather unique sort of whistle scream technique, which he could carry up to the top of the fifth octave and has utilized heavily across his career. For most melody singing, he typically topped out around B4 (apart from a few songs on the Gene Simmons demo that get up to C5), and would instead let bassist Michael Anthony sing any sections or harmonies that went higher then that. While Roth did not use his low range much during this time, he clearly had a bit more to show on that end as well - as can be heard by the G2s and C2 at the beginning of "The Full Bug", as well as a 1979 performance of "Fools" that features Roth trailing down to D2 while giving the song's introductory speech. Overall though, Roth's voice sounded much weaker during this time than it did later in his career, and it was quite audible that he lacked any type of formal vocal training. This period of Roth's career came to its conclusion in 1985, after years of band tensions culminated in his departure from Van Halen, at which point he began to pursue a solo career and was replaced by Sammy Hagar of Montrose.
Roth made his first solo release with an 1985 EP called Crazy from the Heat, followed by a 1986 album Eat 'em and Smile. The latter featured an all-star band lineup, including Steve Vai on guitar and Billy Sheehan on bass, and was well-received for hits like "Yankee Rose", "Shyboy", and "Goin' Crazy". In hopes of gaining more market appeal in Mexico, Roth also re-recorded this entire album in Spanish under the title Sonrisa Salvaje, which made for an...interesting listen, to say the least. He then released his second solo album, Skyscraper, in 1988, which featured the hit "Just Like Paradise". Both of these first two albums showed some noticeable vocal improvement from Roth, with his voice sounding a fair bit stronger up to C5 or so, as well as featuring a bit more use of his second octave on certain songs. It wasn't until his 1991 album A Little Ain't Though, however, that his range truly began to expand like crazy - as this album featured lots of solid belted notes up into the lower fifth octave and sometimes higher. This album also began to show greater use of his low range, with songs like "Sensible Shoes" and "Baby's on Fire" signaling a developing growth of strength and darkness in his mid to lower second octave. Roth followed this album up with Your Filthy Little Mouth in 1994, which only continued these range antics - with songs like "Big Train", "Experience", and the Urban NYC Mix of "You're Breathin' It" now demonstrating some developing first octave range from him, in addition to more fifth octave flexing on numerous songs. In most of Roth's live performances around this time, he also began to use this newfound range to throw in many additional high and low notes to songs, which can heard on the live album In the Heat of the Night, recorded in 1994 at the House of Blues promoting Your Filthy Little Mouth.
In 1996, Roth began working with Van Halen again for the first time in over a decade, as they had recently parted ways with Sammy Hagar and were now without a singer. This resulted in the release of two new songs on the band's 1996 compilation Best of - Volume 1, entitled "Me Wise Magic" and "Can't Get This Stuff No More", both of which featured Roth showing off more of his new range pretty impressively, and in my opinion hinted at a strong musical potential that the lineup had together at this time. Unfortunately, tensions between Roth and Eddie Van Halen resulted in this reunion being short-lived, and Roth left the band once again later that year and was replaced by Gary Cherone of Extreme. In the meantime, Roth resumed his solo career, and released his fifth album DLR Band in 1998. This album was perhaps his most insane to date in terms of range antics, with literally over half the songs spanning three octaves or more. The song "Slam Dunk!" spanned almost four octaves, with a spoken passage that gets down to G♯1 and choruses that top at solid F♯5s, and "Relentless" featured some of Roth's best E5s on every chorus, as well as some strong E2s later on. Roth released his most recent solo album, entitled Diamond Dave, in 2003, which was mostly a covers album of old swing/jazz songs, as well as a few late '60s/early '70s rock songs. Though this album featured much of the same range insanity as its predecessors on several songs, it also did a nice job of showcasing how well-suited Roth's voice can be for old timey bluesy/jazzy music - particularly on songs like "She's Looking Good", "Bad Habits", and "Made Up My Mind".
Roth continued touring as a solo artist after the release of Diamond Dave, but in 2007 rejoined Van Halen for a second time and began touring with them once more. This reunion came to be much more lasting than their previous one, eventually culminating with his first full length album with Van Halen in over 25 years - entitled A Different Kind of Truth and released in 2011. This album featured a much more modern, heavy sound than previous Van Halen albums had, and once more demonstrated a pretty tremendous range span from Roth - with the song "The Trouble with Never" spanning G♯1-D♯5 alone, among others. The band toured for the next four years promoting the album before concluding their tour in late 2015 and going on hiatus. This hiatus concluded in 2020, when the death of Eddie Van Halen marked the end of the band. In the meantime, Roth has resumed touring as a solo artist, and has apparently had an entire album's worth of new material recorded for some time now, but has refused to release it yet for unknown reasons. In a 2019 interview with his current solo guitarist John 5, however, John played a short sample of one of the new songs off this album, entitled "Nothing Could've Stopped Us", which sounds like it could have some promising potential. It remains to be determined if and when Roth will ever this next album, but I would certainly welcome it whenever he chooses to!

{Vocal range video}
Here's the vocal range video that I made for Roth back in 2013. Overall I'd say it still holds up pretty well, but I wish I had started the low notes section higher than E2 and showcased more of his baritone range. I also know a lot more really good notes by him above G♯5 now, so I would make a point to include more of those if I were to remake it.
