{Detailed bio}Best known as the frontman for Extreme and Van Halen during the band's infamous Van Halen III era, Gary Cherone is a vocalist who has displayed an impressive level of consistency over the course of his career, and has more to his voice than one might think on first listen. He has a fairly raspy, somewhat husky sound to his voice that initially caused us to think of him as a baritone back in the early days of TRP, but in reality he was actually probably the highest-voiced singer to ever front Van Halen. His typical vocal style is somewhat reminiscent of Michael Bolton and Paul Stanley, as well as his tessitura - he seems to be most comfortable in the fourth and lower fifth octave, but also has a very flexible high range that he can carry well into the rest of the fifth octave when he feels inclined to. Though Cherone tends to avoid singing too far down into his low range most of the time, he has demonstrated a surprising amount of versatility in the lower range that he has shown us - ranging from a soft, gentle approach for soulful ballad-type singing; a grittier, more bluesy type of sound that he's hinted at from time to time; and most surprisingly a very smooth crooner approach that he occasionally brings out, which can sound reminiscent of Frank Sinatra! Overall he can do quite a bit more with his voice than I would've guessed offhand, and is adept to a surprising number of different musical styles.
Cherone's first serious band was called The Dream (also featuring soon-to-be Extreme drummer Paul Geary), with whom he recorded a few demos that can now be heard on YouTube. It was with this band that he wrote the song "Mutha (Don't Wanna Go to School Today)", which would later be re-recorded for Extreme's first album. After The Dream disbanded, Cherone and Geary formed Extreme in 1985 with guitarist Nuno Bettencourt and bassist Pat Badger, and later became signed to A&R Records in 1987. Extreme's self-titled debut album was released in 1989, and was much more of a glam metal record than most of the rest of their discography would go on to be. In accordance to this, Cherone's vocals were less varied on this album stylistically, but featured many fifth octave notes, including some impressively sustained G♯5s on "Watching, Waiting". However, I would say he really demonstrated what he was capable of vocally on Extreme's second album, Pornograffitti, which featured lots of musical variety and enough vocal versatility from Cherone to match it - with sleazy hard rock vocals on the title track and and "Suzi (Wants Her All Day What?)", softer ballad singing on "More Than Words" (Extreme's best known song to date), rapping on "When I'm President", crooning on "When I First Kissed You", and some of his most piercing high notes on "Li'l Jack Horny" and "Song for Love". I would say that all of Extreme's other albums also feature decently impressive vocals by Cherone, but none have quite topped that album.
After two more albums with Extreme (1992's III Sides to Every Story and 1995's Waiting for the Punchline), the band temporarily split in 1996, during which time Cherone went on to become the new singer for Van Halen, replacing David Lee Roth after his second departure from the band. Though this era of the band has been widely criticized by fans and critics alike, I must say I have some admiration for him stepping into that role, considering that he effectively had to replace both DLR AND Sammy Hagar while also trying to make his own mark with the band. This was no easy task, and you could hear that some of Hagar's material was pushing Cherone's voice at times when performing live. In particular, he apparently had to request that the song "Dreams" only be performed every other night on tour, as he was wary that he would blow his voice out if he had to sing it every night. Cherone also recorded the 1998 album Van Halen III with the band during this time, which has unfortunately been regarded by many as their worst album. Cherone himself has been critical of it in retrospect, saying that he would have greatly preferred to establish more chemistry with the band through touring first, rather than immediately jumping into writing and recording together before he had even had a chance to establish his role in the band. While I will agree that the album suffered from some considerable issues from a songwriting standpoint, I think Cherone still had some unfulfilled potential with Van Halen that we only got to see shades of through some of his live performances with the band.
In 1999, Cherone left Van Halen, and in 2001 went on to start a new project called Tribe of Judah, which also featured his former Extreme bandmates Pat Badger and Mike Mangini. This project was completely different from anything else he had recorded to date - instead of Cherone's typical hard rock style, their music was largely electronic and even industrial at times. It also featured very different vocals to go along with this different musical style - in fact, a number of their songs actually featured Cherone singing in his low range for once! The band was short-lived, however, and only ever saw two releases - a 2001 EP entitled East of Paradise and the 2002 album Exit Elvis. The band then broke up in 2003. From there, Cherone recorded and released his first and only solo EP in 2005, titled Need I Say More, which featured more of a pop and R&B sound for a change. Though he has not had any more CD releases as a solo artist since then, Cherone has since occasionally posted new solo covers on his YouTube channel, including a rendition of the traditional song "Danny Boy", as well as a rather unexpected cover of the Kanye West song "God Is" for Easter 2020!
In 2007, Extreme reformed with 3/4ths of its original lineup intact - featuring Cherone, Nuno Bettencourt, and Pat Badger, now with the addition of new drummer Kevin Figueirido serving in the place of Paul Geary. They released a fifth album in 2007, entitled Saudades de Rock and have toured somewhat regularly since then. On the side, Cherone has also kept active in several other projects, the first being a band called Hurtsmile, which he formed in 2007 with his younger brother Mark Cherone. They have released two albums - a self-titled in 2011, and Retrogrenade in 2014, and in my opinion are actually a very underrated group who sound quite reminiscent of Extreme in a good way. The Cherone brothers also began performing together in a The Who cover band in 2009, called Slipkid, who play in bars around Boston area and sometimes tour the northeast US coast. In this band, Gary pays tribute to the influence Roger Daltrey had on him as a singer, and for the most part recreates Daltrey's vocals quite faithfully. Prior to the formation of this band, Gary had also sung in a one-off tribute performance to The Who organized by Mike Portnoy in 2006, entitled Amazing Journey, featuring the two of them and Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan from Mr. Big.
In addition to all these endeavors in the world of rock 'n' roll, Cherone has also performed in theatre on a few occasions over the years, acting in various productions of Jesus Christ Superstar with the Boston Rock Opera. He has played the parts of both Jesus and Judas in different productions, which are both known to be particularly demanding roles. Though he has the vocal range to capably sing both parts, personally I would say that I prefer his rendition of Judas from an acting standpoint. I would be curious to see him perform in other musical theatre productions at some point as well though!

{Vocal range video}The Vocal Range of Gary Cherone
Here's a range video that mushymarionette made for Cherone back in 2011, though it's somewhat dated at this point due to the different and rather questionable notewatching systems/formats that we used back then. However, it does still have a good showcase of Cherone's high range, so I will feature it here with the disclaimers that many of the lows are pitched incorrectly (including the "short F♯2" from "Set Me Free"), most of the notes listed as "falsetto" are not actually falsetto, and some of the low notes featured really aren't his best examples of them (especially due to the lack of E3-C3 notes featured).

{Video description}Gary Cherone gets way too much flak from the hard rock circles, mostly because of his lackluster-appearance with Van Halen. He is actually a very good vocalist with a very impressive control over his higher range. He is also pretty good at imitating some singers, most notably David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar and Paul Stanley. Paul Stanley has proved to be one of his biggest influences as a vocalist, after all, along with the late Freddie Mercury.
Cherone's voice would fittingly be described as a dark tenor, for he possesses a bright but rough vocal tone, yet the vocal range that comfortably sits up there.
1. 0:00 - A B2 from "Nice Place to Visit".
2. 0:05 - A sung B2 from "No One".
3. 0:17 - "From Afar" and solid B2s.
4. 0:45 - Wonderful harmony singing from "Love Thy Neighbour" with some solid lows (dipping down to an A2) in the background harmonies.
5. 0:59 - A soothing A2 from "Celibate".
6. 1:10 - A short G♯2 from "Pursuit of Happiness".
7. 1:13 - A strong, sung G♯2 from "Hole Hearted" - I wish Cherone had sung more with this rich-sounding lower range style.
8. 1:19 - Short G2 or two from "Sublime", with some rattling vocal fry mixed up there and there.
9. 1:34 - A weird spoken passage from "My Utopia (Antropolemic)" with a solid backing vocal G2 near the end.
10. 1:47 - A spoken G2 from "Exit Elvis".
11. 2:01 - A short but sung F♯2 from "Set Me Free".
12. 2:06 - I have absolutely NO idea if this is Cherone or not, but I decided to include it just in case: a spoken low passage from "Cupid's Dead" which bottoms around B♭1 in full voice.
Edit: Turns out it's Ian O'Malley.
13. 2:23 - Great sounding singing from "What's the Buzz", found in Jesus Christ Superstar: Cherone hits a good A4 around the beginning.
14. 2:34 - A great-sounding B♭4 from "Smoke Signals".
15. 2:42 - A sustained G♯4 (with a short B♭4) from "Shadow Boxing".
16. 2:50 - Melody singing around B4 from "Left for Dead".
17. 2:58 - A clean B4 from "Pornograffitti".
18. 3:04 - A live version of "Mean Streets" with Van Halen, Cherone really channels Roth's style here, and hits couple of B4s too. (I'm definitely not a fan of Cherone-era Van Halen's music, but I think Gary sang many of Van Halen's tunes notably well live)
19. 3:26 - Lots of B4s from "Just War Theory", Cherone also apes Johnny Rotten's vocal style during the verses.
20. 3:38 - A majestic tenor high C (C5) from "Song for Love".
21. 3:47 - Great G♯4s and a couple of C5s from "Decadence Dance".
22. 4:16 - Singing around B4, with C♯5s thrown in there too, from "Money (In God We Trust)".
23. 4:35 - A C♯5 from the ever-so-groovy "Get the Funk Out".
24. 4:44 - Lots of great B4s and one C♯5 from "Jesus Would You Meet Me", Cherone showcases great control of his higher range here!
25. 5:05 - A nailed Paul Stanley-impersonation, with a C♯5, from Extreme's cover of "Strutter"!
26. 5:15 - A wonderful D5 from "Celibate".
27. 5:28 - Blistering B4s and a D5 from "Kaffur (Infidel)".
28. 5:51 - Two wonderful high note moments from "Tolerance Song": first a steady C5/C♯5 from the intro of the song, then a clean D5 from another part of the song.
29. 6:11 - A clean D5 from the intro of "Play with Me", back when Cherone lacked the rasp.
30. 6:16 - A powerful D5 from "Peacemaker Die".
31. 6:24 - An E♭5 from "Set Me Free", impressive!
32. 6:36 - Lots of B4s, and also a D5 and an E5, from "Fire in the Hole".
33. 6:50 - Yelped highs up to E5 from "Love Thy Neighbour".
34. 7:03 - Fantastic singing from "Ambiguous Headdress" with some very impressive C5s and even one E5.
35. 7:18 - A screamed E5 from the live performance of "Right Now".
36. 7:24 - Two F♯5s from "It ('s a Monster)".
37. 7:33 - E5s and F♯5s from "Unconditionally".
38. 7:51 - F♯5 during the fade-out of "Lil' Jack Horny".
39. 8:01 - Insane E5s (and an additional F♯5) from "Pornograffitti".
40. 8:23 - A full G5 from "Pornograffitti"!
41. 8:29 - A falsetto F♯5s from "Play with Me".
42. 8:38 - A short F♯5 from "Get the Funk Out".
43. 8:41 - E♭5s and a sustained F♯5 from "Smoke Signals".
44. 9:10 - Probably Cherone's most impressive vocal moment, an incredible passage from "Song for Love" with a sustained E♭5 - After that, Cherone hits some G5s and ends the passage on a fabulous falsetto B♭5. Wow!
