{Detailed bio}Felipe Del Valle is a Chilean progressive/power metal singer possibly best known for his work with the band Delta, but who has since gone on to also since for the bands Witchblade and Drake. Like many singers in his line of work, he possesses an extensive high range that he makes frequent use of in his music, stretching well into the upper fifth octave with impressive resonance and control. His tone is considerably light and clean, and reminds me slightly of Andre Matos (someone who was apparently a considerable vocal influence on him), but he has proven himself capable of manipulating that tone to sound rougher and grittier at times, sometimes even approaching harsh vocal territory with certain heavier vocal passages in songs. Though second octave singing is rare from him, he makes frequent enough use of his lower third octave range, and on the rare occasion that he does drift down into the second octave, he seems to be able to access that range more solidly than I would have expected (even getting some decent G♯2s in one performance of "Eterna Paz"). One signature characteristic of the vocals in Delta were the complex harmony arrangements that were featured in many songs, which could often span from the second octave to fifth octave, though I am not sure how much of these parts were Felipe's voice and how much may have been other band members.
Felipe began his career as a founding member of Delta in 2003, and released his first album with them the following year, entitled Apollyon Is Free. Though he audibly already had a decent bit of range developed at the time (as the album spans a solid D3-G5), on this album he was a bit more reserved with using it than he would go on to be later in his career - focusing much of his singing in the upper third and fourth octave, and not really going into the fifth octave for melody singing as often as just sustained screams. However, he quickly gained more confidence in his fifth octave abilities by the time Delta released their next album, 2007's Black & Cold, which showed him easily singing melodies in that range throughout the song. It was also on Black & Cold that Delta began to develop their signature vocal harmony sound, which continued to be featured on their next album, 2008's Crashbreaker. During these years, the band began to gain more of a popular following, and released their first live DVD in 2008 as well, entitled Live at the Beginning. They followed this up with the 2010 EP Desire Within (which featured a metal cover of the title song from the movie Ghostbusters), another full-length album later in 2010 entitled Deny Humanity, and another live DVD in 2011 entitled Virtual Live. On Delta's fifth album, 2013's The End of Philosophy, they featured a guest appearance by former Royal Hunt vocalist John West on the song "Bringers of Rain", which helped the band gain more international recognition from fans of West's other work. Unfortunately, however, this ended up being Felipe's final album with Delta, as he left the band in 2014 and was replaced by Rodrigo Varela.
Following his departure from Delta, Felipe joined the Santiago-based power metal band Drake in 2015, replacing their previous vocalist Carlos Mardones. Unlike his work in Delta (which had entirely been sung in English), Drake's lyrics were written entirely in the band's native tongue of Spanish, which Felipe continued to do as he began to write new music with them. He released his debut single with them later in 2015, entitled "La Respuesta", which was followed by a full EP in 2016, entitled Simbiosis. Though Drake's music was written in a somewhat similar power metal vein to Delta's, Felipe's display of studio range with them has proven to be somewhat more conservative, mostly topping at E♭5, with occasional higher backing vocals. However, in his live performances with them, he still throws in higher notes quite regularly, and also sings as high as F♯5 on renditions of some of their older material. In 2016, Felipe also joined the band Witchblade, another Chilean-based power metal band that sings in English, and took on the daring task of replacing their previous female singer, Pia Carpanetti. So far he has yet to release any studio material with them, but has performed live with them regularly from 2016 onward, and has done an admirable job of replicating the vocals on the original versions of their songs.
In 2019, Felipe released his first single as a solo artist, entitled "Sueño de Metal", which demonstrated promising potential for future solo music, though it remains to be confirmed as to whether he plans to do anything else of the sort. Since the 2020 Coronavirus lockdowns, he has additionally gotten involved in two new online collaboration projects as a way of staying active until his bands can play live again. One of these is called the Shonen Dudes, which performs metal covers of anime theme songs with lyrics rewritten in Spanish - such as "Stand Proud" from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and "Jiyuu No Tsubasa" from Attack on Titan. The other is called NuevAnormalidad, which is a more traditional metal cover group that performs songs like Deep Purple's "Stormbringer" and Masterplan's "Spirit Never Die", with a rotating ensemble of vocalists and instrumentalists. Felipe also joined a new band in 2020 called Dolezall and promptly began recording music with them - first releasing the EP The Weight of History towards the end of that year, which was followed several months later by the release of their first full-length album, Look at the Distance, in 2021, which demonstrated more impressive vocals by him and shows that his range and technique are still doing quite well these days.
Outside of performing as a traditional metal artist, Felipe has also dabbled in theater to a small extent - having played the role of Simón Zealotes in Jesucristo Metalstar (the Spanish version of Jesus Christ Superstar), of which there is footage on YouTube of him performing the character's title song in the show. In addition to this, he has sung in live performances of the historical metal opera Husar, a project organized by Chilean singer Ives Gullé telling the story of guerilla leader Manuel Rodríguez Erdoíza. For this project, Felipe played the role of José Miguel Carrera in a number of 2015 live performances, which were very well-received by audiences. Following this, Felipe was also invited to partake in Gullé's next metal opera, which was entitled Invasión, and also featured similar historical themes about the founding of Chile. For Invasión, Felipe played the role of Bartolomé del Pozo, and was featured on the studio album recording of the opera, which was released in 2017. Though both of these parts have been somewhat small roles, they make for some very cool guest appearances by him, and I hope he continues to appear in future projects of Gullé's!
