{Detailed bio}Known by some as "the voice of melodic metal", Rob Rock is a highly proficient power metal/Christian metal singer best known for his work with the band Impellitteri, for whom he has served as singer on three separate stints collectively spanning over 20 years. Outside of that, however, he has also had an extensive career that has involved recording with a number of other artists such as Axel Rudi Pell, Joshua Perahia, Driver, and M.A.R.S., in addition to his own solo career. As a vocalist, he very much embodies the power metal archetype of being a high note aficionado, with a fifth octave range that he can belt in for days and extends up to some piercing siren-level pitches. He has proven himself to be a remarkably consistent vocalist over the years, and seemingly has not lost any of his high range even later in his career (which is particularly impressive now that he's in his 60s!). Much like many other power metal singers, though, he spends considerably less time singing in his low range than in his high range, and on a number of albums avoids any usage of that side of his voice whatsoever (such as Impellitteri's Screaming Symphony album, where he bottoms at B3!). However, over the course of his career he has proven to have some surprises in his low range as well - very occasionally demonstrating some surprisingly solid notes down to the lower second octave, and on extremely rare occasions even breaking the first octave! Overall his vocal range is very much a force to be reckoned with, even if he gives his low range far less spotlight than his highs.
Much of Rob's early career involved scattered albums with various bands every couple years throughout the 1980s, before eventually settling into his more tenured position with Impellitteri in the early 1990s. He began his career in 1983 with a cover band called Vice (of whom a few very rare pieces early footage still exist online, such as this video of them performing Rush's "Tom Sawyer"), which served as his introduction to guitarist Chris Impellitteri. The band later began to write original songs, and recorded a three-track demo together in 1985, but then broke up later that year. While it was an ultimately short-lived project, it did serve as a means for Rob to get his name out more, as he then moved on to form the supergroup M.A.R.S. with guitarist Tony MacAlpine and former Ozzy Osbourne bassist Rudy Sarzo and drummer Tommy Aldridge. Though this band was also short-lived, they released the critically-praised album Project: Driver in 1986 before breaking up later that year. Following this, Rob temporarily reunited with Chris Impellitteri, who was forming his own band simply called Impellitteri, and recorded a self-titled EP as part of that band, released in 1987. This EP was also well-received, and was hailed by listeners as an American counterpart to the brand of neo-classical metal that Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen had been pioneering for the last few years prior. However, Rob was not able to continue with the band beyond this first EP release as he had already made additional commitments to the band Joshua, and thus departed later that year and was replaced by Graham Bonnet, formerly of Rainbow and Alcatrazz.
Rob's stint with Joshua ended up being short-lived as well, as he left the band in 1988, but recorded the album Intense Defense with them, which was also well-received by critics. His next band was Angelica, whom he recorded a self-titled album with in 1989, before forming the band Driver later that year with former Joshua bassist Emil Lech-Brando and keyboardist Greg Shultz. Also included in Driver's lineup were guitarist Roy Z and drummer Reynold "Butch" Carlson, both of whom would go on to play in Rob's own solo band in the 2000s. The band recorded two demos in 1989 and 1990, then released a self-titled EP in 1990, which featured the song "Warrior", which would go on to become something of a personal theme song for Rob, as he later re-recorded it three times (twice with other artists, and once again with Driver for their reunion in 2008). Once again, though, Driver proved to be a shorter-lasting project, as they disbanded in 1990, at which point Rob went on to join the solo band of guitarist Axel Rudi Pell. He released the album Nasty Reputation in 1991 as a member of Axel's band, before leaving to rejoin Impellitteri in 1992.
Upon rejoining Impellitteri, Rob enjoyed a successful eight year tenure with the band, during which they released six studio albums (1992's Grin and Bear It, 1994's Answer to the Master, 1996's Screaming Symphony, 1997's Eye of the Hurricane, and 2000's Crunch), two EPs (1993's Victim of the System and 1997's Fuel for the Fire) and the 1998 live album Live! Fast! Loud!. Many of the band's biggest hits were featured on these albums, such as "Rat Race", "Countdown to the Revolution", "The King Is Rising", "Speed Demon", and "Victim of the System", and Rob gained a reputation as the band's "classic" singer for his performances on many of them. However, in 2000 he elected to leave the band to pursue a solo career, at which point Graham Bonnet was once called in to serve as his replacement.
For his solo career, Rob once again collaborated with his former Driver bandmates Roy Z and Reynold "Butch" Carlson (as well as bassist Ray "Geezer" Burke) to record his first album Rage of Creation in 2000. Though his solo band underwent a few lineup changes over the years, he released three more studio albums over the course of the 2000s - 2003's Eyes of Eternity, 2005's Holy Hell, and 2007's Garden of Chaos, as well a live album in 2009 entitled The Voice of Melodic Metal – Live in Atlanta, which featured a recording of his 2008 set at Progpower IX. In between recording and touring for these solo albums, Rob also joined a few other bands as side projects for varying amounts of time - the first being the band Warrior in 2001 (which Roy and Burke were both former members of), with whom he recorded the album The Code of Life in 2001. Later on in 2007, Rob also formed the short-lived band Fires of Babylon, which also featured one of his other solo guitarists, Carl Johan Grimmark, and released a self-titled album in 2008 before breaking up. Following this, Rob partook in a reformation of Driver in 2008, and released his first full-length album with the band titled Sons of Thunder later that year. This album featured rerecorded versions of the six songs originally featured on the band's 1990 EP, as well as several new, previously-unheard songs, including an alternate version of the song "Change of Heart", which Roy Z had previously written and recorded with Bruce Dickinson.
In 2008, Rob rejoined Impellitteri for the second time, and released the album Wicked Maiden in 2009, which made for a very impressive display of his vocal range between the high notes up to A5 in the title track and the low notes down to D2 in "Holy Man". Since then, he has gone on to record two more albums with the band, 2015's Venom and 2018's The Nature of the Beast, and remains an active member of the band to this day. On the side, he has also released another album with Driver in 2012, entitled Countdown, and toured as the vocalist for guitarist Gus G's solo band in 2016. Outside of his various main projects, Rob has also had an extensive list of guest appearances as a vocalist, and has lent his voice to several metal opera collaborations, such as Avantasia from 2001-2002 on the albums The Metal Opera and The Metal Opera Part II, and Timo Tolkki's Avalon in 2013, on the album The Land of New Hope. In addition to all of his performances as a metal and rock performance, there are a few videos on YouTube that show Rob singing church traditionals with a solo piano accompaniment, where his vocal abilities still shine just as impressively. On the whole, he is definitely a singer who deserves our respects for his incredible vocal range and singing abilities!
{Vocal range/high notes videos}Here are two old range videos that were made for Rob, one by Jowox and one by Vilhja, made between 2009-2012. They don't have descriptions listed anymore, though, so I've included a note list with timestamps here. Neither of them quite covers his entire range (though Vilhja's comes pretty close minus a few of his bottom notes), but both of them represent his vocal abilities quite well.
