Summary:
While his nickname "The Boss" being only tangentially relevant to his image in its origins, it very quickly acquired a new definition regarding Bruce Springsteen's extremely working class lyricism and his iconic, raspy and big baritone sound. You'd think a baritone of his weight would have very strong low notes, too, but you'd be misled. It was not until the '90s and The Ghost Of Tom Joad album that Bruce really started honing his before-strained low notes. Instead, Bruce has stayed mostly in his comfort zone, doing beefy belts up to sometimes as high as C5, and sticking to his very country-influenced mid-register, occasionally whipping out a smooth but sadly underemployed clear falsetto.
Bruce is an absolutely intense live performer, even to this day, often overdoing his own studio takes in live settings. Bruce is also legendary for the amount of artists he has covered while on tour, having done thousands of covers throughout the years, hosting some of his most significant sung phrases and on top of that they are often some of his most memorable live performances. No doubt, an absolute powerhouse to have been able to play 3-hour-average sets for 50-some years, and he will remain a lasting mark on the history of rock 'n' roll, for his charming lyrics that exude romanticism, for his country-influenced songwriting, and his unparalleled stage charisma.
{General Vocal Timeline}1964 - 1972: Going by the few recordings of Bruce's voice during this era of his career, singing with The Castiles and Steel Mill, he had an almost quasi-tenor-like approach to his vocals akin to the original rock 'n' roll singers of the '50s and '60s. Showing a surprisingly light tone compared to what it would come to be, apparently singing constantly with a high larynx, showcasing very little grit to his voice aside from a few 'growly' high notes. No significant low notes from this era that I'm aware of.
1973 - 1979: The start of Bruce's solo career. As he figured out how to position his larynx appropriately, he started developing grit along the way. Described as a 'Cookie Monster'-like approach; Bruce's high notes could get screamy, as he was most likely not accustomed to supporting a soft palate grit technique at this time. His distortion would often take the form of a doubly phonating voice akin to someone like David Lee Roth. This abuse of his vocal cords is the most likely cause of his 'blown-out' head voice that would come into more effect later in his career. Low notes start coming into play during this era as well, although they're very unrefined and never go below the upper second octave; even G2s are often reached with vocal fry.
1980 - 1981: Entering the most cataclysmic era of his voice, Bruce begins seeing a vocal coach around the time of the River Tour and his singing begins to improve. His belting range starts improve exponentially, developing more resonance and control. His grit starts becoming more supported and his grip over it starts to tighten, even if he still sounds a little screamy up there. Nevertheless, he busts out some intense performances like "I'm A Rocker" and "The Ties That Bind" during this time, that showcase him even scratching the fifth octave. His comfort zone with low notes still seems to be around the low third octave, and he never seems to steer very far from that.
1982 - 1983: The bleak nature of the Nebraska album allows Bruce to refine his low register quite a bit during this era. The album itself is pretty much all soft singing, and showcases little high range as a whole. Although as a result of this he begins to experiment with more varied techniques, and during this era his tone develops more into the New Jersey accented high baritone he would be basically for the rest of his career. On the title track of Nebraska especially, his lower range shows early signs of the strength it would gain later on, as he's reaching down to the high second octave more comfortably now. He avoids using using vocal fry at all throughout the album, and can reach decent G♯2s.
1984 - 1985: The Born in the U.S.A. album and tour features Bruce's best singing to date, with great control of his upper register as well as an overall more varied vocal style. He's now capable of belting cleanly, like on "Dancing In The Dark", as well as showcasing immense control over his gritty high singing as demonstrated by the iconic title track "Born In The U.S.A." There's even occasional falsetto thrown in there, in the song "I'm On Fire" more specifically. However, Bruce's low singing is very sparse save for this one track, and doesn't seem to go through any significant development during this era.
1986 - 1993: Arguably Bruce's vocal peak. Being fully transformed into the New Jersey accented high baritone we all know and love on the Tunnel Of Love album, he can deliver his trademark chesty, gritty belts but no longer sounds strained when doing so, and can also convincingly sing in a much more softer style for songs like "My Beautiful Reward", "If I Should Fall Behind", and much of the second half of Tunnel of Love. His overall tone is much warmer and richer than it's ever been, as showcased by the lovely mid range belting on the title track of "Tunnel Of Love". Having definitively found his voice by this point, he can pretty much sing anything in his repertoire now and sound great. Vocally, the famous Christic Benefit shows in 1990 are probably the best Bruce has ever sounded.
1994 - 1999: Range is intact but his tone develops a twangy, adenoidal sound, possibly an affect due to the folks-y sound of the Ghost of Tom Joad album. This sound crosses over into the Reunion Tour; he sounds more powerful than ever on the full force rockers but 'unnatural', for lack of a better word, on slower numbers like "Meeting Across the River". Because of this newly incorporated twangy sound, he can sound a little flat on cleaner and slower songs.
2000 - 2006: Massive improvement throughout this period. He loses the twang and really settles into his older voice. He's on top form vocally throughout the Rising Tour, unleashing some of his most powerful and diverse vocals to date. If his falsetto had gone a little underutilized before, it comes into a lot more effect during this time, a beautiful and welcome addition to his range, best displayed on "Lift Me Up", "All I'm Thinking About", and performances of "The River". The Devils & Dust solo tour of 2005 has him in excellent form throughout and really highlights how his voice has matured and improved over the years.
2007 - 2009: Sounds excellent on the first leg of the Magic Tour, returning to the full, open throated style he had during the Born to Run era, but with improved technicality, most likely because he's having to work around his age to be able to sing resonantly. He suffers from a bad throat problem during the early shows of the Working on a Dream tour, leaving his tone sounding strained and flat for the rest of the tour.
2012 - 2014: Sounds great throughout most of the Wrecking Ball tour, aside from a few off-nights here and there. The High Hopes tour, however, has him often sounding rough and tired, often with a rasp permeating his entire range. A much needed break from touring follows.
2016 - present Bruce sounded excellent throughout the 2016 River Box tour. The rasp is gone and his voice has the most power it has had since 2007. Check out "Back in Your Arms" from Dublin this year.
