{Vocal Summary}
Justin Bonitz, also known as Hungry Lights, which is also the name of his main solo project, is a metal and rap vocalist from the United-Statian nu metal band Tallah and a bunch of solo projects and side projects. He is probably one of the most productive and creative self-taught musicians, producers and singers in the YouTube metal community, with projects ranging from electronic music, to rap and all the way to rock and metal, all of that usually mixed together with a folk, experimental and ambient background, and the hint of insanity that makes him so unique. Also a full-time vocal teacher since 2020, he is famous for his particular attention to vocal health and techniques and as someone who never stops discovering new things with his voice and pushing his limits. Due to hating his voice, he would try to get away from it by always trying new types of screams, mixing techniques, using his signature distorted clean vocals and so on. He also loved to impersonate cartoon characters and Disney villains and sing their songs, so he has always been bound to be good for imitations of accents (“Kungan”) or intonations (“Welcome Home”). He is an eccentric and diverse vocalist who’s great at sounding like different characters within a single song, sometimes in less than a minute (“My Finest Hour”, “Thief”, “This Is War 8”). His vocal efforts were therefore always well regarded and respected in the YouTube metal community, and he is often invited by other artists/bands for nu metal tracks to make rapped or screamed parts.
Justin’s passion for his predilection genre, that is, metal music, starts back when he played Need for Speed Underground around 13 years old in 2003-2004 and with Element Eighty having their song “Broken Promises”, which Justin loved, in the soundtrack. However, he needed a little bit more time to get into the genre, and made a journey into rock and hard rock music, then back to metal music a few years later with Lamb of God. By the way, he took his clear diction in screamed vocals from Randy Blythe and trained by talking into them. When he got his driving licence in September 2006, he was still playing games late at night and needed something not to fall asleep while driving to work and back home: singing. A little later, Tim McIlrath from Rise Against was the first vocalist who made him want to try harsh vocals when he was 16/17 years old.
In 2008, Justin formed his first band 6 Minutes to a Wheelchair while he was 17 years old. He started off as a fry screamer and while he didn’t really have control over his tone that left to desire (“All the Way to the Bank”), he also was technically screaming correctly. He was always a naturally light tenor but used his mid low to mid ranges a lot at this time, rarely going above E4 in clean vocals. That being said, he already had a really good control over his distorted cleans in 2009 (“Inùtil” 2009 version). Two years later, when his voice had fully changed, he lost the muscle memory to do his high fry screams, and eventually developed his current go-to style, the fry-false cord hybrid screamed vocals, which he found the terminology for years later. He was still unsatisfied with how high he could go with his new screaming style, but with Emulsion and Everything at Its Finest Hour he already had really solid screams with good understanding of resonance (“Simulating the Effects” Evolution at Its Finest Hour version), and his growls already became ferocious (“The Default Illusion” Aorta Borealis version). In 2011, his low register still wasn’t particularly strong, rather breathy, but well controlled down to the mid second octave, and he was starting to put more weight and projection into it decently down to the upper second octave (“Inùtil” Aorta Borealis version). Despite having good technical control early on already, he was also quite pitchy and imprecise with his melodies until roughly 2013. A little before amnaeon would become his solo project, he started going in multiple directions musically speaking, notably with his rapping project General Reem that showed very interesting ambient composition but monotonous rapping (“Four Miles Down” As the Crow Flies version). He later developed his rapping skills, both from a flow and expressiveness point of view firstly when fusing his rapping with his amnaeon full length demos, and even more later with Prilly T and Tallah especially (that is, writing his own lyrics, so outside of his covers on YouTube).
Out of frustration from not being satisfied with his mixes and not knowing how to improve them, he went on a hiatus from March to October 2012. Eventually, he found the motivation again through recording, mixing, and mastering tutorials on YouTube and newly written music. Indeed, Aorta Borealis IV sounded less dry, more heavy, percussive, and dynamic in terms of atmospheres. It was around this period that all his side projects of rap and electronic music merged into his main solo project at the time, amnaeon. It was also with this release lastly mentioned that he really started to shine as a particularly solid vocalist, composer, lyricist, and producer. He started adding more chest voice in his screams (very Chester Bennington-like: “Travels”, “T.A.P.E”), which gave him more volume and consistency, with a go-to range in the upper 4th octave using this technique. It took him years to be able to switch back and forth between cleans and screamed vocals, and he finds it easier to switch from screamed vocals to raspy cleans then, hence his recurrent distorted approach in clean vocals. All That Remains was a band he would use a lot to train on these switches (“This Calling”). It can be observed that his cleans in both chest and mixed register were overall more solid (“Prite & Prill” The Proamates III version). He started using high harmonies in the upper fourth and lower fifth octaves in non-distorted clean vocals (“Kar’tahn” Aorta Borealis IV version, “The Temple of Knowledge”), which hinted at his great progress in clean vocals. He didn’t have the comfort to show such clean execution in main vocal lines yet and still wasn’t the most comfortable in his falsetto and non-distorted cleans (“The Cobbler’s Eye”), though. The next year, he started messing around with what he calls the arytenoid rattle which unlocked a new texture in his screams, and discovered whistle fry but didn’t start using it in his music just yet until 2015, as observed in the famous “Ghost Feet”. Overall with the amnaeon 2013-2014 demos, he brought more diversity and expressiveness in his vocals, using his falsetto for texture and dynamics matters rather than necessity (“The Slagwerks” General Reem II version), alternating between distorted and non-distorted clean vocals more often (“Krayle of Narthois”), showcasing an occasional rockiness in his low register (“A Father’s End” The Proamates III version). His low register was explored a little further, and while he would still rarely go lower than the upper second octave, when reaching the mid second octave, his tone gets surprisingly dark without sounding weak (“The After’ahk”). Overall having much more comfort, he was obviously having fun again making music. In consequence of his progress, he expanded his usable range a little more with each release. By 2016 he had pretty much fully mastered all the techniques he knew at the time and therefore had started learning new techniques again, starting with learning guttural lows and later on, fat and nasty sounding mids (“Cryomancer”).
Moving on to his comedy side projects, Snailfetus Kidney Sacrifice, ranges from dirty, forced growls to overtoney high fry screams, not to mention the pig squeals and inhales punctuated by an over-exaggerated saturation effect and the blast beats (“Birdflu Pandemic”, “Petrie’s Wings”). On the other hand, Otto Rocket & The Proamates showcases an intentionally chaotic band (on the project’s first release, at least) accompanying pitchy vocals, breathy lows and screams that are so terrible they produce stronger subharmonics in the highs than the screams’ actual pitch, and death growls that are either weak or turned into 1st octave growls (“The Boardwalk Man”, “Get You Back Home”). He’s successfully pushing metal vocals to an hilarious extreme, which, all jokes aside, shows he knows what he’s doing whether it is for serious or purely comedic vocals. Back on amnaeon, a little after he had released General Reem II, he announced he would keep revisiting his old music that he had been writing since 2006 with Mt. Krell I this time, however, the album was never released: he ended up deleting his YouTube channel, his social networks pages and his Bandcamp page out of being heavily upset that his fanbase preferred his covers over his original music. He then came back in 2015 under the stage name of Hungry Lights, and reimagined one last time his old compositions in four albums from a story called From Windfall to Hell. The fifth and last volume of the story still has yet to be released. On a softer side, Justin’s solo albums Mt. Garbage and The Summit showed his rawest emotions with soulful vocal efforts in his comfort range, “You’re on Your Own”, one of his oldest songs being a great example of that. He developed a great control at low larynx singing by 2017 as observed in The Summit version of “Skyline” or “It Beats for Me” for instance, also later demonstrated in “The First God” One-Take Vocal Performance, and also has a fascinating has a great ability to sound more feminine (“Bring Me to Life”, “Vermilion Pt. 2”). His rapping and speeches became really expressive over time as well (“Curious to Know”, “The Slagwerks” General Reem II version, “Flip”, “Silver Lining”), and he still has his signature “uhm” to introduce his rapped verses. Most likely as a reference to his father’s origins, he often uses a Jamaican accent in his rapped verses (“Reflaugh”).
Although he had 10 years of good singing and screaming technique, Justin started experiencing a few vocal loss episodes. The first time was when he did a 20-hour long (!) stream on 2016-2017 New Year’s Eve while overusing, overprojecting, and overcompressing his voice, all of that while getting drunk, sober, and drunk again. The next day, his voice was gone, and yet he still kept practising during that period in order to sound as best as he could under the worst conditions, which he sure does not recommend anyone doing as of today, and caused his voice to require two months and a half to fully heal. He got another episode of vocal loss while recording vocals for Three Gods & Me a year later due to overuse (7-10 hours of recording per day for a week), overprojection and overcompression again due to the duration of his recording sessions, and having the bad routine of starting to record immediately after waking up. Right after that, he had to track vocals for Tallah’s first EP, in early January 2018, so his voice sounded hoarse and limited (as in, he couldn’t write more demanding vocals due to his fatigue at the time) on certain passages of the EP (“We, The Sad”). Due to losing the habit of live bands and how much his voice had evolved, he nearly experienced vocal damage in February 2018 after an entire day of overprojection and overuse while driving to Pennsylvania, rehearsing with Tallah, having a show with them the evening, and shouting over loud music when talking with people before, after the gig and on the way back home. He said it was a wake-up call for him due to how badly he had blown his voice, so he started taking vocal health particularly seriously from there, taking habits such as talking as little as possible and resting as much as he could when on tour. It was really hard for him to undo this bad muscle memory of overprojection, and he removed a bit of that chesty approach in his screams to focus on fry screams more. In 2019-2020, after experimenting with many mouth shapes and resonances, he developed more and more techniques and nuances in his screams such as tunnel throat screams or tongue positions giving a disgusting aspect in his hybrid highs (“L.E.D.” One-Take Vocal Performance). To this day, he still refuses to teach his allegedly dangerous “toilet boil” gutturals technique (“Overconfidence”, “Placenta” Novro Studios 2019/08/19), and his growls now sound stronger and deeper than ever, hell, even abyssal (“Headfirst”, “Vanilla Paste”).
In 2020, he started teaching vocals and consequently researching about his vocals to fully understand them and figure out better, efficient ways to scream safely. He then took classical singing lessons for six months in 2021 and applied all the knowledge he had acquired to screamed vocals as well. From 2021 onwards, it was all about tweaking and mixing techniques and tongue positions to unlock new or better pig squeals (“Core Theater”) and whistle fry screams (“From the Night”, “Dicker’s Done”). His character development both from a story writing and performing point of view makes him look convincingly deranged at times, in the best possible way (“Cowardice” One-Take Vocal Performance). Justin has a notoriously immense knowledge on screamed vocals in particular, undeniably great control over clean vocals, captivating theatrics both in front of a camera and on stage, and a strong ability to push his limits. He is currently at his best and probably won’t stop growing as a staple of the metal scene whether it is as a musician, producer, or vocalist (unless he self-sabotages with his controversial edginess, but that’s another story).

About half of these questionable notes (38/74) are actually Justin trying his very best to sound like a terrible rock/metal vocalist through his comedy side projects. Also I don’t consider him gasping loudly (in Tallah songs particularly), even for a few seconds to be questionable notes worth mentioning because their nature is extremely obvious.
[1] marks yelps and short trills in high range or anacrusis and short dips in low range.
[2] marks notes of questionable identity that cannot be confirmed to be the singer in question.
[3] marks non-melodic notes that don’t have a significant enough pitch to warrant inclusion.
[4] marks notes that possess uncertain pitch or have been pitch-shifted.
[5] marks notes that have insufficient tone and/or little support (very throaty and weak sounding).
[6] marks notes that are most likely produced via reverse phonation (inhaling).
