{Vocal/Artist Summary}Best known as the lead vocalist for the bands Soundgarden and Audioslave and for his solo career, Chris Cornell is regarded as one of the greatest vocalists of all time. He is known for singing high with extreme weight, power, and sustain and for his unique vocal tone across his entire range, as well as his experimental music writing styles and lyrical expression.

He demonstrated the ability to pull the near full weight of his chest voice to around F♯4-G♯4, best noticeable in the 1989-1991 era, in songs such as "Drawing Flies" and a cover of "American Woman". He used a very chesty sounding mix up to around B♭4-C5, mostly during his time in Audioslave in songs like "Light My Way" and "Shadow on the Sun". However, he is best known for his strongly developed mixed voice. He sang developed, extremely heavy mixed notes up to around the B♭4-C♯5 range, mostly during the 1994-1996 era, in songs such as "Mailman" and "Never the Machine Forever". He demonstrated the ability to still sing strong mixed voice notes up to around the D5-E5 range, mostly during the 1990-1993 era, in songs like "Right Turn" and "Call Me A Dog". He used a still powerful but lighter mixed voice up to around G5 in his 1988-1990 era, with impressive vocals in the song "Smokestack Lightning" and two incredible live versions of "Ugly Truth", and even even utilized his mixed voice up to the top of his range, with his highest note being a surprisingly clear and powerful A5 glissando in "Full On Kevin's Mom". He also used his falsetto range sparingly, such as in "She Like Surprises" and a few live versions of "Blow Up The Outside World" where he sings part of the transition guitar riff during the solo. As a main melody component, it was almost unheard of, with one example being the bridge of "Wave Goodbye".

Cornell's lower range was used significantly less, though not infrequently. He was capable of some dynamic low singing, typically down to around C3-A2, best seen in songs such as "Take Me Alive" and an acoustic "Halfway There" demo, though examples of lower range being the focal point of a song such as these are few and far between. On rare occasions, he demonstrated the ability to sing strong low notes down to the F♯2-G♯2 range, best noticeable in songs such as "Other Side Of Town", "Missing", and "4th Of July" in the backing vocal track. He very rarely sang below this, and typically used fryish or partially spoken techniques to do so, but some passable melody line D2s in "Beyond the Wheel" as well as stronger E2s in the 2014 version of "Storm", a clear singular C2 & C♯2s singing the riff of Johnny Cash's version of the song and some decent spoken notes demonstrated potential there as well.

Chris Cornell was also a prolific music writer. He started writing music for Soundgarden soon after its formation in 1984 with one of his first tracks being "Storm" comprised of tape and sound effects (original currently unreleased, 2014 remake listenable here), and more properly, "Kingdom of Come" from Fopp, recorded in 1988, where you can already hear his use of unique structure and time signatures during the transition to the chorus. He quickly became the band's primary music writer, writing music for 7/12 songs on both Louder than Love and Badmotorfinger, including writing the entirety of the singles "Loud Love", "Rusty Cage", and "Outshined". His musical style changed drastically over the following years, especially with bassist Ben Shepherd's introduction of alternate tunings, which were present in the band's most popular songs "Black Hole Sun" and "Burden in My Hand". He also experimented in other ways with unique sounds and tones such as with the near-ethereal intro of "The Day I Tried To Live", contrasting guitar tones that gave off alluring and mysterious or threatening and depressing atmospheres with odd time signatures in "Pretty Noose", and a slow, heavy-blues style in "Tighter & Tighter", all songs written entirely by Cornell. With his solo work, Cornell wrote multiple solo albums & standalone songs with a more mature-sounding acoustic style, with songwriting standouts such as the open-tuned "Seasons" and the piano-and-organ-heavy "When I'm Down". He explored many musical styles, such as heavy, metal songs like "4th Of July" and "Outshined" as well as semi-acoustic country and blues influenced songs such as "Mood For Trouble" and "Blow Up The Outside World", with folk inspirations in songs such as the unraveling-riffed "Uncovered" and the EEEEEE tuned "Mind Riot".

Cornell's lyrics delved into a variety of topics even from his starting days, writing about subjects such as truth-avoidant culture in "Ugly Truth", fragility of life in "Like Suicide", and disassociation from past lifestyles in "Ghosts". Depressing subjects such as in "Nowhere But You" far outnumbered upbeat messages in songs such as "Dusty", and Cornell even stated "Black Hole Sun" was a sad song despite claiming to not know its meaning post-writing. He wrote more lighthearted, jokey lyrics in songs such as "Full On Kevin's Mom", "Sub Pop Rock City", and "665", but even in these cases, the vocal lines made with the lyrics always fit in well with the song and instrumental, and the music was impressive and unique whether it was written by Cornell or another band member.

His talents in both singing and writing memorable, unique music will always remain unmatched and will continue to influence musical acts for a very long time.

{Vocal Eras}
1984-1986: In the two currently listenable 1986 performances, Cornell's vocal style was quite undeveloped, with many seemingly aimless screams and yelps to uncontrolled pitches. Many of Soundgarden's early tracks remain unreleased as of mid-2024. An early version of "Incessant Mace", the Deep Six versions of "Heretic", "All Your Lies", and "Tears to Forget" and a clip of the song "Summation" are the few recordings we have from that era, and these are similarly yelpy, though more coherent due to the studio setting. However, despite the poor techniques of this early era, the impressiveness of Cornell's vocal tone technique still shone through and helped Soundgarden stand out from their peers despite their lack of popularity until several years later.

1987: Cornell's vocals improve significantly. He sings high notes with more clarity, such as in the arguably grunge-defining "Nothing To Say" where he hits a sustained A4 and solid D5s as well as "Entering" where he sustains an E5. He also sings some clear highs up to E♭5 in a live performance of "Beyond the Wheel" and yelps up to G5 in "Nothing To Say" from the same concert, his highest note of the era. His more screamy style has become much less prevalent but is still present in a few songs, such as at the end of "Nothing To Say" and the entirety of "Tears to Forget".

1988-mid 1990: This is arguably his vocal peak, as he brings his voice up to his peak highs. He sings up to A5 in mixed voice, even live on two occasions. He frequently sustains notes in the E5-G5 range in studio recordings and live performances, including an iconic E5 in the intro transition of "Loud Love" as well as some impressive G5s in "Smokestack Lightning" and two live versions of "Ugly Truth". Cornell's voice is more controlled and precise than previously as well, with the sole remnants of his more screamy early era vocals being "Head Injury" and "Incessant Mace".

late 1990-early 1993: Cornell tries to sing in a more melancholic, more intimate manner in Temple of the Dog to great success while implementing part of that to Badmotorfinger in the song "Mind Riot". He is also able to sing with more grit and hit piercing highs up to the F5-G♯5 range in songs like "Searching With My Good Eye Closed" and "Jesus Christ Pose" though he lost some ability to sing his highest notes with quite the clarity and length of some of his 1988-early 1990 notes, not going for things such as the F♯5s in "Hands All Over/American Woman live performances. Examples of him using his low range are rare and quite undeveloped save for some decent low singing down to G2 in "Missing" from the Singles soundtrack. This is considered his vocal peak by many.

mid 1993-June 1994: The strongest areas in Cornell's voice start to shift, with him singing stronger and heavier lower 5th and upper 4th octave vocals in some Superunknown songs, such as in "Mailman", "Limo Wreck", and a live performance of "Room A Thousand Years Wide" where he holds out a strong vibrato D5. He also demonstrates greater control over his upper 4th and lower 5th octave than he ever has, in songs such as "The Day I Tried To Live" and this performance of "Fell on Black Days". Cornell doesn't sing quite as high as he did during Badmotorfinger era as a seemingly stylistic choice, with the exception of a couple of F5-F♯5 screams in "Let Me Drown" and "Spoonman". Though even his most impressive live performances never truly replicate them live, he puts up some impressive performances of similarly high vocals live in songs like "Beyond the Wheel" and "Jesus Christ Pose". His lower register also starts to show promise with "Like Suicide" and some backing vocals in "4th Of July", but it will take several more years before he truly builds on it.

July 1994-early 1996: Cornell continues developing his stronger lower-5th mixed-voice sound, particularly noticeable in the Down On The Upside studio recordings in songs like "Never the Machine Forever" and "Ty Cobb" and live such as in this 1995 "4th Of July" performance. His distorted vocal technique in the upper 4th octave becomes more controlled and quite inimitable, noticeable in "Pretty Noose" and "Burden in My Hand". Cornell can still sing high, but that aspect of his voice has declined somewhat, with notes above D5 becoming much less frequent and heavily strained, in great contrast to shows at the start of 1994. In general, his singing is harsher and more and strained during the 2nd half of 1994, likely as a result of busy touring and worsening habits, leading to Superunknown tour date cancellations and no public Soundgarden shows from September 1994-July 1995. His low range returns to its pre-Superunknown uncommon usage.

mid 1996-1997: During the Down on the Upside tour, Cornell's high range is still used in most songs, though notes around the D5-E5 range are much less frequently used and aren't sustained for as much time. The infamous Cornell rasp that started showing up around 94 is starting to become very prevalent. Many songs are becoming a big struggle in live settings, such as "Waiting for the Sun" and "Slaves & Bulldozers". He still occasionally puts up impressive performances, such as in this 1996 "Outshined" performance sung with agility and range reminiscent of Badmotorfinger days, though in general his voice is in need of rest & recovery from years of demanding vocal styles.

1998-2000: Cornell's soul, bluesy nature really starts to blossom, with a warmer, stronger mid-lower register and tone throughout his voice as a whole. His higher register is generally better off than it seemed to be in DOTU era, with Euphoria Mourning arguably housing more impressive highs than DOTU album, with good examples of this being the "Mission" E5 and replication of it live. Though he struggles a bit on highs here and there, his vocal agility in the upper 4th and lower 5th octaves has noticeably recovered from the Down on the Upside tour days, noticeable in some live performances such as this one of "Fell on Black Days". Though his lows sound stronger, such as in "When I'm Down" and a live version of "Like Suicide", he avoids singing below the upper 2nd octave, even more so than in Soundgarden.

2001-2002: Cornell strengthens his lower register significantly, with strong lows on the debut Audioslave self-titled album, such as a strong B2 in "Hypnotize", and a C3/A2 in "We Got the Whip", but he avoids singing below the upper 2nd octave. Many of the high notes of this era are uniquely packaged with a very chesty, distorted delivery that makes his vocals distinct from anything that came before, noticeable in songs such as "Shadow on the Sun" and "Light My Way". While never hitting quite the highs of the late 80's and early 90's, Cornell had found a new vocal identity that was something special in its own right.

2003-2006: Almost overnight it seems his highs disappear, with his voice finally succumbing to a chainsmoker sound that had varying levels of presence in his vocals since 1994. Even his upper 4th octave notes strained to the point that his distorted chesty approach of this era becomes (arguably) unpleasant to listen to, with his 5th octave suffering even more so. His mid and lower registers are in a much better spot generally, noticeable in a couple of live performances of "Slaves & Bulldozers" and "Hypnotize", although even they arguably suffered somewhat as a result of vocal damage. There were some exceptions, such as a few "Set It Off" live performances and a "Spoonman" scream, but these occasions were rare. His 5th octave notes would sound more musical when he sang with a lighter, non-distorted tone, which carried on to his future eras. While the strain would never fully phase out, his voice would recover from it.

2007-2009: Chris Cornell finally seems to prioritize preserving his voice, and getting back what he had as a result of years or even decades of unhealthy vocal styles, overtouring, and personal habits. Chris starts taking lessons from a coach to relearn high notes, and generally approaches his upper 4th octave and 5th octave notes in a lighter manner, which results in a cleaner, more pleasant tone. This is noticeable both in-studio and in live performances. The strain of audioslave era still often creeps up in live performances and will haunt Cornell for the rest of his life, but things do improve. He puts his lower register to good use in this era too, going into the second octave on several occasions.

2010-2017: The new decade marks the return of Soundgarden, with Cornell putting up a better performance than one might expect, with him singing up to F5 in studio and live, which he hadn't done in over a decade, and singing songs like "Beyond The Wheel" in the og key (despite a strained, worn out tone being present). Cornell also generally shows more vocal agility than he had for almost a decade, but can't quite pull off heavy, distorted sounding notes without giving folks Vietnam flashbacks to Audioslave-era vocals, with some exceptions. In Chris's acoustic shows, he truly plays to his strengths with a warm, melancholic tone that can make even the toughest of cookies shed a tear, soaring to highs up to E5 that that are quite clean, or have a strain that only adds emotional impact, capturing the tortured soul that Chris was throughout his life. Despite many vocal issues, particularly in the 2012-2014 era (noticeable in-studio with "Storm" where he struggles to sing even G4s with power), he keeps up these vocal strengths up to his last few years, noticeable in solo acoustic shows, Soundgarden shows, and an especially captivating sustained E♭5 from a cover of "You Don't Know Nothing About Love".

I'm not sure I agree with some low-note inclusions personally. For one, I could never be genuinely sure if there's indeed a D2 in rusty cage, might be an illusion. The vocal master has the harmonies, and all you really hear is a double-tracked lead. It might just be the other instruments. You do get the impression something's doubling it there with all of the band playing, and you definitely hear two recordings of Cornell singing, but I'm pretty certain it's not Chris doing the 2nd octave.

For now, I think you're right. I noticed that the D2 didn't appear in the isolated vocal tracks, and I didn't take that as proof enough as things can be missed (like the "4th Of July" highs in its vocal isolation), but then I took a look at the instrumental.

{I hear some sounds that likely cause the sound of the supposed D2 at 2:38, and also more faintly at 2:19 and 2:28. It's ONLY at the end of the vocal lines, exactly where the "D2" is heard.}

I hear some 3rd octave vocals very faintly in the "instrumental" track - just at 2:38, but it could be at the other two points too even more faintly. That could also cause the illusion even though vocals of these pitches are also in the vocal track. EDIT: I forgot to add "I might be mishearing", if it's there it's probably too irrelevant to even count towards an illusion.

I used the full length vocal track for this: EDIT: THIS DOESN'T HAVE THE LOW VOCAL LINE! I didn't think even consider that a possibility so I glossed over it.

All that is to say, I can hear how the instrumental would cause the illusion of a D2 & can't hear an actual D2 so it's been moved to questionable. amadeusd or someone else might have some debunk to this however, and I'm still open to hearing that.

I actually spent several hours across multiple days picking the current thread pic out. I wanted a picture that seemed to represent him as an artist in the most accurate way. I wanted one with him playing guitar as his rhythm guitarist/songwriter skills are a very important aspect of him as an artist, and I wanted a picture where it looked like he was singing in his signature impressive, high belting style with accuracy and precision to represent his greatest qualities as a vocalist. While there are a few issues like quality and facial hair (lol), those aren't aspects I view as disqualifiers. This one stood out to me immediately after looking through thousands of photos (seriously).

Having gone through what you've posted in the Discord, I just think you're mistaken.

Those 'isolations' appear to be after-market as it were, and are missing what is clearly audible in the actual track.

I think basing whether or not its their on edited isolations that aren't actually trained on vocals per se is a mistake. THe instrumental doesn't even seem to have the D3 you're pointing out, just some interaction between the instruments.

At this point, it's inarguable as far as I'm concerned. Listening to the actual track is where you're going to find notes in the track - and in this case, it is clearly audible in the actual track. If you feel different, sure. But, this isn't even a debate to my mind. It's similar to the claim that Axl is tenor. Just.. what? Listen to the track. It's audible. 

If we had masters, i'd be more than happy to take seriously what you're putting forward here largely because this is apparently so hard to hear (it really isn't...), but it just seems an attempt to knock it off for no good reason to me...

I think this is hte case, and it's not actually got any vocal tracks in it.... It seems a rather extreme reach to me to say that what's in that instrumental is either A. the most accurate rep. of what's going on, or B. includes a vocal line with D3. I cannot hear it, at all. The two tracks you spliced back together appear to clearly miss multiple elements of that part of the song (one guitar overlay, for instance, along with at least two of hte vocal tracks - the main vocal being doubled, with only one there, and *none* of the low-end vocals).For another piece of context, there are several isolations of BDS that i've heard which do not catch the F#s other than the grit on the disengagement which we discussed.

Again, until there's some evidence that the note isn't there (when it's clearly audible) in an official sense, I think it is bad practice, and potential just an out-right empirical mistake to say that a D2 which can be heard on the end of all three lines in that bridge, isn't there. I'm unsure why, either?

I don't think the C#2 or C2 are countable. They just seem like weak, fryish dips to me. The D2 is actually pretty solid and might be a good choice for both bold and lowest note.

Eerrr not really? When I think of a very weak low note, it's usually very airy, not supported, lacking in tone, etc. The C2 and C#2s are a bit fried, which is to be expected of a singer's lowest notes, and a bit short, but they're really not that weak. They got a solid tone, are stable, and are decently audible. They're of similar quality of B.T.W's first D2 imo if not a tad stronger

Edit: If you want a Chris Cornell C2 were the above criticisms apply, look no further than the Jesus Christ Pose C2, it sounds very weak without the effects in the studio song, I'm on my phone right now so linking to iso vocals of it would be quite inconvenient, sorry.

Tbh, I think the Jesus Christ Pose C2 would be a better extremity than the C2 or C#2 currently in the thread. It may not sound the nicest, but at least he can hold the note and it has some musical context.

amadeusd I know I asked for a debunk, but your comment comes across as character assassination first and informative second. You seem to be heavily focusing on magnifying my mistakes (which are noteworthy but not incredibly stupid mistakes) in order to make it seem like I'm fully unaware and using backhanded remarks like how it's "apparently so hard to hear (it really isn't...)", though there are a lot of important corrections in your post which I will address. I know you're annoyed at seeing another remake of the thread without the "Rusty Cage" D2 when you clearly hear it but I need to actually hear it to put it in! What I was hearing as the D2 was an illusion, and you say you're hearing low vocals across the entire vocal line which I am not, and that's a very important in my opinion, as I believe a lot of those who hear the "D2" are not hearing this either.

I believe my approach of getting isolated vocal tracks has some merit. If there's a full track where you hear the "D2" and it can't be found in any of the isolations from the track, then it's not present, and if it is present it should be more audible in one. I know you're sure of what you're hearing and think trying an isolation approach is unnecessary but there should be SOME way that it can be heard more clearly. Also I'm not sure what you mean by "after market" but I believe both the vocal isolation I linked, and the vocal isolations rebaru & I linked are not isolations using software, they were more official as channel rips from things like blu-ray discs and video games like "Rock Band" - the isolations of "Big Dumb Sex" you're referring to would be isolations using software as Louder than Love doesn't have blu-ray or re-released audio and obviously wouldn't appear in video games like "Rock Band" - though it would be cool if it did!

Having said that, none of them seem to be fully accurate (as you suggest), which gives reason to look further. The vocal isolation I sent seems to miss doubled vocal tracks like at 2:36 but not "ALL" vocal harmonies, you can clearly hear some at 0:55), and the one rebaru sent seems to miss the earlier lower vocal harmonies even though it does catch doubled vocals at 2:03. The most accurate vocal isolation I have at the moment is this one, which catches both the lower F#2 harmony with clarity and doubled vocals. I still am not sure it's accurate, I'll concede this. I haven't found a "4th Of July" isolation that catches the higher vocal line, so that's evidence that a D2 could be missed in all vocal tracks of "Rusty Cage" as well.

I think the instrumental I posted is off too, maybe a guitar line is missing as you said but I can't pinpoint it exactly, it sounds like the ending is a bit different. I also think I'm likely being illusioned into the D3 and even if it's there it's probably just a leftover from the vocal track (like how drums are noticeable in some vocal tracks) and also not likely causing significant sonic illusions itself.

I take accuracy seriously as people use this forum as a source for vocals and I hope it becomes accepted as reliable. I specifically ask for information in the thread:

I understand, but not everything is going to have a cut-and-dried answer. Additionally, and I will catch flak for this: This is far from the most accurate source of vocal information. It is accepted here that falsetto is not it's own register which is patent bollocks, evidenced by mountains of empirical data. The forum also uses the word "anacrusis" to mean something completely different to what that word actually means, and given its a specialised word to mean an extremely specific thing, this is clearly another example of the forum being very lax with accuracy. I appreciate you wanting to improve this, but until issues like these two are addressed instead of ignored (which they are, routinely, despite evidence presented to prove what i've said) acting as if accuracy is the main point here is probably not hte best move. We're not even naming things correctly.

Are they copies of hte master tracks? No? Then we cannot trust them. None of these isolations are complete. That's just hte world we live in. Maybe one day they'll do one of those "Greatest Album" retrospectives on BMF and we'll get the engineer sitting about waxing lyrical about hte day Chris recorded this super-low, guttery line in Rusty Cage. Until then, I will go by what I (clearly) hear in the source material. I think you are making a pretty huge mistake doing what you're doing - it is obvious isolations aren't helping in this case.

Original Fire B2 might've been at 2:22, on the exhale after the B4?

Tighter and Tighter B2 was at 1:25, on the drop off after the G3, with another one at 1:34

I'm not sure of the pitch of the Tighter and Tighter notes at 1:25 and 1:34, but I'm hearing both of the ends of those as E3 currently. The "Tighter and Tighter" B2 was also marked as a [2], so I'm not really sure what it would be, though you did point out the "Never the Machine Forever" C3 which was also marked as a [2] and was clearly Chris.

Original Fire, yeah maybe that was the B2, though if it is I'm of course not going to include it. I thought it was some weird mispitched backing vocals that appear at 2:50. I think they bottom at E3 on "can't con-TAIN"? I think processing/effects is making it sound compressed and lower, but I don't know this stuff too well.

Idk what to say, I disagree. The note starts at F5 but it gets to F#5 by the end and Motorist seems to agree.

This passage's key is D minor so it should be F5, meaning he's overshot it of half a semitone, rather than sung a flat F♯5
