I will say that as much as I'm glad to hear Anselmo putting his low register to proper use finally, I'm kinda bummed he didn't do it in the 1992-1996 era or so because he sounds really weathered now. The melodic ability of his singing is so compromised now from years of abuse that it doesn't really have the level of emphatic "and now I am singing low" vibes that Suicide Note Pt. 1 had. There's a mumbly/grumbly feel that he seems stuck with but it's still cool to hear the amount of boom he can get.

Its interesting though because your voice is supposed to lower with age, right? I wonder how much lower he'd be able to go if he took better care of his voice. Im not sure how beloved the band would be without his screams either seeing as most people point to that era as their faves. To me this is the best since Cowboys, although I do love a lot of the singing on Nola.

I'm not sure if he necessarily would've been able to go lower if he had taken better care of his voice (I mean let's be real here - there's not a lot of need for notes below E1 in his style of music anyway), but I think what Zedd was saying was that he would've been able to get down into the mid first octave with clearer and more pronounced tone. His voice wasn't quite as low back then, but he still had a pretty extensive low range that sounded more emphatic when he used it; whereas nowadays his voice is so low that he basically just has to grumble his way through what pretty much is already his natural speaking range, but doesn't really have as much tone while doing so because his voice is so worn and abused.

What always confused me about Phil is what the hell happened to his speaking voice between '88 and '92.

But by 1992 he was already well down the path of the gruff macho man speaking voice.

My guess is the drug abuse had a major impact on his voice lowering but maybe some of it was also general aging. I've heard people say that men's voices don't fully settle until around 25 and he was only 20 in 1988 so maybe it's a mix of those two things.

I dont know how much he was into drugs early into their career. I dont think that started until the mid 90s. Id say its more likely from booze and cigarettes.

Pretty sure he didn't have a drug problem until around the Far Beyond Driven era
