Of the 3 lead singers of modern metal giants Mastodon, Troy is probably the most prolific. Generally identified as the "heavy" voice in Mastodon, he's also by far demonstrated the widest vocal range capabilities. On the band's first two albums Troy handled nearly all the lead vocals that predominately consisted of harsh shouting and (on Leviathan) gritty mid range belting. In the years since then (particularly since 2011's The Hunter album) we've seen Troy's preference for high range belting improve and expand considerably, making way for some tremendous displays of vocal power on newer albums. Despite being the lowest voice in Mastodon it is perhaps evident that his low register is only seldomly used in that band. However, his alternative rock project Gone is Gone has made extensive use of his low register, demonstrating that it can be both bassy at times (see Forbidden Fire, Slow Awakening, or the backing vocals in Colourfade as examples) as well as soothing (such as in Dublin or Starlight). Given these rather recent developments I suspect we will continue to see him expand his vocal style and capabilities in years to come.
