Brian Francis Johnson (5 October 1947)
Member of: Geordie (1971 - 1980), AC/DC (1980...)
Vocal Range: B♭1 - A5
{About}Nowadays a quintessential love-or-hate voice, from his more cleanly-affected soaring in his first band, Geordie, to his (in)famous powerhouse screaming in living rock legends AC/DC, Brian's singing has proven itself to be a bit of an acquired taste. Despite naturally possessing a respectably warm baritone, showcased mostly in the backing vocals of Geordie and occasionally anacruses in the music of AC/DC, Brian has consistently insisted on singing in the very heights of his voice. While this approach has been a surefire way to familiarize everyone with his music, it is not without its downsides; this style having been very hard to maintain throughout his years of singing and inadvertently ending up downplaying Brian's surprisingly developed lower registers.
Miraculously, after having suffered a continuous downgrade towards the end of the '80s and during the '90s, ever since the start of the '00s Brian's voice has actually been growing into another beast altogether. Indeed, despite perhaps nevermore being able to replicate his former glorious G5s, Brian's tone has become surprisingly consistent in recent years, his twangy diction and scratchy head voice remaining though retaining much of his newfound vocal power. After having let Brian go due to hearing problems in favour of touring with Axl Rose, AC/DC have recently talked about bringing Brian back once more, potentially enabling the continuation of the band's ridiculously consistent output and to a greater extent the extension of their rock 'n' roll legacy.
