{Description}
One of the most successful and beloved entertainers from America, Eddie Murphy's talents as an actor, comedian, writer, producer and singer have led him to be the sixth highest grossing actor ever in the U.S., breaking boundaries with his explicit comedy and paving the way for African Americans in the entertainment industry to levels of stardom that were highly uncommon for the time. His singing abilities would appear anywhere from his stand up parodies of popular singers, his three solo studio albums or simply in movies he was in.
In my humble opinion, Eddie is one of the best, if not the best, actors that also sing. Simply put, the man has a sense of versatility that rivals that of some of the most dedicated professional singers out there. Through his various comedic impressions, as well as his own original music, Eddie boasts a chameleon-like ability to change his vocal tone from bright and mezzo-esque to gritty and more characteristically masculine that can even alternate in the same song. This has contributed to his wide array of convincing singer impressions, including Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley and Bob Marley, as well as many other non-musical impressions. His voice is notably high placed, with his comfortable upper register utilized a fair bit more than his lower register, which can also be quite flexible and strong sounding depending on the performance ("Always Is Love" and his Elvis Presley impressions display him transforming his natural tenor voice into a deeper, more baritone-esque fach). High notes are really where his vocals shine the most, with chesty, clear sounding high notes up to the lower 5th octave and gritty, powerful head voice notes that extends across the majority of the 5th octave (not to mention reaching soprano high C with falsetto). Given his vocals on most of his original material, he seems to favor a relatively lighter delivery than some of his more raspy sounding impressions and characters (not to say he doesn't use it, as his 2nd album "So Happy", in particular, features a decent amount of grit-laden vocals).
Even in spite of his reputation as a wisecracking comedian who doesn't take himself (or other people) too seriously or some of the negative reception surrounding his own studio records, Eddie Murphy is not to be underestimated as a singer. His extensive range, wide array of vocal impersonations and winning charisma showcase an amount of vocal talent unmatched by virtually any of his peers.
