Perhaps the quintessential heavy rock powerhouse, Axl Rose's role in Guns N' Roses was no small one, as it was his stellar songwriting and his immediately distinguishable voice that led to some of rock music's most iconic and influential songs ever being recorded. Axl himself, however, had never been one to shy away from controversy - his aggressive persona has resulted in late concerts, fan riots, and strained relationships with the rest of the band. Known in equal measures for his turbulent temper as he is for his extraordinarily distinctive voice, the Guns N' Roses frontman is a fine example of one's reputation preceding the individual themself, though even those only familiar with his biggest hits would struggle to deny that he has helped revolutionise hard rock music.
Now by-and-large famed for his soaring raspy head voice high notes, Axl's vocal placement is actually a rather low one. While his lower notes have often been relegated to backing harmonies, he boasts an extensive lower register, sounding boomy and confident even into the first octave. That being said, Axl's powerful upper register is where most would say his voice shines; early Guns N' Roses songs showcase him singing in a gritty head voice almost exclusively, his unorthodox technique for which has likely caused his evident vocal decline over the years. Although his more recent performances are significantly weaker than they were thirty or so years ago (with Axl singing in what most fans affectionately call "Mickey Mouse" voice), his legacy as one of the most unique and potent vocalists in hard rock lives on.
{A Few Examples of His Voice}
Pretty good showcase of what early career Axl was all about - consistent gritty highs up to F5 and an impressive melisma at the very end down to E♭3.
Possibly Axl's best vocal performance? Yeah, very possible.
Just because it's a good representation of Axl not singing in his raspy head voice and instead focusing on his mid-range/lower register
