I was recently offered tickets to see them this summer but I had to pass on it because this approach is definitely not the norm and odds are I'd get another rodeo with Micky Mouse. His voice is still great, but only when it is not taken to his old extremes. His 5th octave is pretty much gone.

youtu.be/Dhk8HC9IHog?t=38 B2 from this clip of him in 2022. Not sure on the specific gig but I found it before and he's singing the entire thing an octave lower. Yeah he said he was sick during the show, had problems with his voice, and actually apologised to the audience because he would be changing his approach.

Ironically, his approach was preferable to the alternative.

I've always been of the opinion that Axl is one of those rock vocalists who frequently sings higher than he needs to/than the song actually calls for. Like high notes in rock are great and all, but if singing in that range makes your tone sound like...that, you might be better off with a relatively more restrained approach. I think how he sounds in that concert is closer to what would better suit his vocal sound overall, though it could stand to be a liiiittle bit higher. If he had more songs where he sang like he does on "Chinese Democracy", I think that would be about spot on. That high pitched voice suited him better 35 years ago when he looked like a kid. Or maybe it suited the 80s as such better, there were a lot of boyish looking musicians, some with poodle hair, some with makeup. Usually they tried to come across as masculine. The girls liked their ever-pubertal style.

Chinese Democracy in particular is a wonderful display of vocal wankery. It's like he listened to "More Than a Feeling" and set that as the standard for every song. It's extremely impressive but definitely over the top. Unlike Brad Delp though he could pull it off live for a while but a change is definitely necessary. He's 60 after all, he can take a day off.

What's the rationale behind bolding the Eb3 in that phrase at the end of Rocket Queen? Surely the F5 preceding it is the most notable? There's nothing special about the Eb3

I don't like this but... B4 in the chorus harmony and some D5s at various points

it's exactly at 3:01, I hear it, it's definitely there. It's a backing note. Sounds like D2 indeed

I thought Steingrim meant he heard a Bb2, hence I said the sung note was definitely lower. We are all in agreement it is a D2.

Bb5 at the end of the song here. I think it is Axl. I noticed the thread got a nice update recently but there hasn't been any further discussion on this note yet. What's the verdict on it?

I agree that the B♭5 scream is Axl! The video quality is rough, but it sounds like Tracii is still holding G♯4 when Axl reaches the top note.
Also, just a heads up that both the F1 and C6 links are broken.

I believe he gets up to a G#5 in the bridge of "Better" live at Rock Am Ring 2006 Also, the early shows of 1986 are worth taking a closer look at. These shows stand alone because the guitars are in E standard as opposed to Eb.For that reason, all the songs are a half step up and so "Don't Cry" features E5s which is a new highest note that should make its way onto the thread. The Roxy show is linked below. Interestingly, a lot of the songs had not been fully worked out melody and structure wise and so, although you would expect a performance of "Rocket Queen" to have an F#5, the highest I could find was an E5. Same with Nightrain, no G5 that I could find. Here's a bang on the money E5 in "Don't Cry" (just like in the Demo version I linked in a previous post). Edit: Also a song not on the thread is performed as the show's closer "Goodnight, Tonight". B4s and an E5 at the end. Song starts @1:20:10 Edit 2: Hennessy Macklemore III not quite matching your find but I raise you this Hollywood Rose Demo called "Cold Hard Cash". E5s, F#5s and a solid A5 at the below timestamp
