(Disclaimer: I'm new to learning about singing and am a COMPLETE and UTTER noob. But excited to learn.) Had a question! In the first 30 seconds of their 1988 VMAs performance, Axl does this really cool 'howl'. How does he do that? Would this be considered some sort of whistle? You should have seen the old forums, there were tons of people debating those kind of notes (people to this day don't even know if the studio version of that note is a C5 or C6). But when it comes to whistling you have 3 broad variations: 1) Whiste whistling- the type of whistle most people are familiar with, where you pucker your lips and blow air to create a high pitched sound. 2) Whistle register- the stuff Maria Carey is famous for, where the sound is produced straight from the vocal cords with an open mouth. 3) False cord/overtone/inhale screaming- This is a variety of techniques where the singer compresses and closes off their throat to produce a harsh sound. Similarly to 1) whistle whistling, the high pitched sound comes from air being blown through an extremely narrow space, except this time its the space between the folds of the throat rather than the lips. Adjusting the position of the throat muscles and the amount of air being blown can lead to a huge variety in the type of sound output. But usually its harsh and rough. To cut a long story short, Axel's howl here falls in category number 3, probably inhaled for that matter. There is also flageolet and a glottal whistle. The latter being primarily in the seventh and higher octaves. Adam Lopez uses it. Dimash too. And flageolet is the strong, almost head voicey whistle that a lot of coloratura sopranos use above the high E-flat.

Guns n' Roses just dropped their first new song in 13 years! Well, "new" in the sense that it hasn't been officially released before, but apparently this was recorded way back during the Chinese Democracy sessions, and they finally put it out now with Slash, Duff McKagan, and Melissa Reese recording over the previous tracks for their respective instruments. The only rangey notes in it are some pretty strong F♯5s that appear recurrently throughout the track, which I'm gonna go out on a limb and say are notes that Axl would only be able to hit with significantly less power nowadays Yup, it's the old Silkworms track that they played live in 2001. Now featuring Eslash noodling all over it.

How are we feeling about the C6/C♯6 at the end of "I Don't Care About You" these days? I wanna say it got discussed a long time ago and was ruled out as someone else besides Axl, but listening back I'm not entirely convinced... I think it could be him purely based on the fact Axl says “that hurt man” after but then again he could have hit his toe

E5 in the Demo version of Don't Cry. The entire thing is a semi tone higher for that matter.

Bb5 at the end of the song here. I think it is Axl.

Bb5 at the end of the song here. I think it is Axl. I've seen that footage since long time ago, even I remember including it on my horrible vocal range video for him some years ago but currently I'm not enterely sure that really worth counting it (reason why haven't posted here before). I mean it's appreacible a rare vocal disconnection between first part of vocal running and the B♭5, the B♭ comes as some sort of crack that make it seems bit questionable, not sure is legitly controlled to the point we can say "he can hit B♭5". EDIT: But at least could deserve be part of the spoiler box.

Also Alex61 I believe there are 2nd octave notes worth counting in the demo versions (technically still there in the final versions) of Chinese Democracy and Riad.
Worthy of admission? (G#5?)

These Eb5s in "Live and Let Die" in 2016 are worth a bold I reckon (though I know there is an F#5 listed already). It's 10 seconds of pure excellence.
Also, I know there are already 5 notes for "Welcome to the Jungle" but this I'm sure this is the longest scream he's held for that song. Such an iconic note.

youtu.be/Dhk8HC9IHog?t=38 B2 from this clip of him in 2022. Not sure on the specific gig but I found it before and he's singing the entire thing an octave lower.
