I don't know what else to say. There isn't anything separating those notes from his other highs, tone-wise; there's a noticeable continuity in his range.

Fair, but calling them black notes implies they're predominantly full voiced mixes and they just really don't sound that way. Dickinson historically mixes almost all of his fifth octave notes. From C5 - F5 it's fair to say his mixes are predominantly full but the higher he goes the lighter they get. There is no singer alive or dead at this point who can mix a C6 well enough to call it black imo. Maybe Dimash lol.

The point of the blue notation isn't so we can have endless debate about how "mixed" something is (we went down that road, trust me on it), it's to mark obvious falsetto (many of the keys specifically say "soft falsetto") to note easily-distinguishable registers.

That's my error then. I assumed blue denoted any note that is falsetto or primarily falsetto in register.

Updated for the first time in a while to include the two new songs from "Senjutsu" :thumb: I'm probably missing some other stuff since I haven't been active in a while. If so, let me know!

I heard someone describe "Stratego" as having "the highest note that we've heard Bruce hit in a long time" - was surprised/slightly disappointed to listen to it and only hear his standard D5s! Just goes to show how differently non-notewatcher ears can perceive vocal pitch. Good song though, I hope more of the album is in that kind of 2000s Maiden vein, cause I enjoy that a lot more than what we've gotten on their last two albums. Anyway, if you're updating the thread, here are some E♭5s that I found last year. Figure they're worth including since that's currently a pitch that he doesn't have many examples of. Bruce does a guest spot with Bill Ward at the linked timestamp, singing "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" a whole step higher than the original! He lands flat on some of the top notes and dodges a few of the others, but there are definitely some legit E♭5s in there, such as 56:44 and the section at 58:41.

I'd say it's G5. The squeak you hear is most likely caused by the recording quality.

What you seem to be hearing is almost definitely microphone feedback, so Bruce's note isn't that high for sure. However, beneath that poor audio quality, I think I hear him hitting another legit C♯6 there! That's the same one that's already in the thread :thumb:

I got permission from clem to notewatch Senjutsu for this thread, so here's what I got: - "Senjutsu" - A4s, B4s, C5s, E3s, D5
- "Stratego" - has already been notewatched
- "The Writing on the Wall" - has already been notewatched
- "Lost in a Lost World" - E3s, D3s, B4s, D5s
- "Days of Future Past" - B4s, D5s
- "The Time Machine" - E3, B4s, A4s, D5s
- "Darkest Hour" - E3s, A4s, B4s, C5s
- "Death of the Celts" - nothing significant (quite a rarity for Bruce era Maiden!)
- "The Parchment" - E3s, A4s
- "Hell on Earth" - B4s, D5s, D3s, A4s
Overall I'd say the album was better than I expected - probably my favorite of theirs since the 2000s. The last two really haven't done much for me, and have felt less inspired and memorable on a songwriting front. This one gave me some nice flashbacks to A Matter of Life and Death, and I liked the addition of the keyboards on several songs - made for a nice way of freshening up their sound with something new, that also worked well with the writing and didn't sound forced.
However, I must say it was a pretty poor decision to put three ten minute+ songs back to back at the end of the album, especially when most of those tracks REALLY dragged on with overly-fluffed instrumental and solo sections that I'm sorry to say did not do a good job of retaining my interest. That portion of the album actually reminded me of some of Dream Theater's super long songs, in the sense that you probably could find a good song in there if you trimmed the fat enough and cut back on all the unnecessarily lengthy instrumentals...but in their current state they just feel overly bloated and more of a time commitment than listening to them is ultimately worth.
