{Detailed bio}
Though a relatively obscure singer in the grand scheme of things, Phil Naro was a shockingly accomplished musician with a large, diverse discography and an incredible voice to boot. Among his best known accolades are being a Daytime Entertainment Emmy Award winner for performing the theme song for the cartoon 6teen, serving as the frontman of the band Talas from 1983 to 1986 (and then later on again from 2017 to 2021), and for working with former Kiss drummer Peter Criss during his solo career in the early 1990s. However, in between these somewhat more well-known names, Naro was also involved in dozens of other bands, lending his powerful, emotive voice to what feels like a countless number of original collaborations, along with a wide array of cover/tribute bands to boot. Naro's career also spanned a wide range of genres, including heavy metal, progressive rock, glam metal/arena rock, and even a couple very unexpected outliers like Christian rock/metal and a country parody album. In terms of his range, Naro possessed one of the most consistent male voices I've ever heard up to D5 - with notes in the B4-D5 range being his main money notes that he really knew how to make shine in many of his songs. Though he also had a number of very good notes above that, he noticeably was less daring with notes E♭5 and higher live, and sometimes modified vocal melodies to avoid having to hit such notes. His strongest high notes usually capped out around F5/F♯5, with his notes above that usually being either soft falsetto or very airy, weak screams. Though his high range was clearly the much stronger end of his range, he cumulatively had a surprisingly decent amount of singing down to B2 for a singer as clearly high note-oriented as himself, as well as a few occasional notes below that. However, he audibly got breathy when singing in the second octave, and sometimes was even unable to hit notes like A2 when performing live (as can be heard in his live covers of Led Zeppelin's "The Ocean" during the low portion of it).
Naro began his career in Toronto, Canada, in 1979, first singing for Glam Metal band Chain Reaction, with whom he released his debut album X-Rated Dream in 1981. His vocals on this album already demonstrated a strong potential and solid high range, but in some ways were more restrained than his later releases would be. However, he began to explore this potential further very quickly after, which audibly came to fruition by 1983 when he was hired as the new standalone frontman for the at the time up-and-coming Buffalo hard rock band Talas. In this band, he was hired to simultaneously replace the band's previous two vocalists - original guitarist Dave Constantino and original drummer Paul Varga (while new guitarist Mitch Perry and new drummer Mark Miller were hired to replace them as instrumentalists). With this new lineup, they began to play shows performing songs off the band's second album, Sink Your Teeth into That, as well as a handful of new originals that they had written together. The band's 1984 live album, Live Speed on Ice, featured recordings of this which showcased the band in top form, including some excellent vocal performances by Naro. Though Talas got considerable attention for this lineup and showed great promise for things to come, it unfortunately came to an end all too soon after when bassist and band leader Billy Sheehan received the offer to play in David Lee Roth's solo band, and chose to leave Talas to pursue this as a gig with more guaranteed success. For a short period afterwards, Naro attempted to keep the band going without Sheehan, but by 1986 Talas had fallen apart. For the remainder of the '80s, Naro moved back to Canada and had other band pursuits that included replacing future Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie in Coney Hatch, and a short-lived stint with the band Toyz, with whom he released a single self-titled EP in 1989.
In the early 1990s, Naro was contacted by producer Eddie Kramer, who invited him to be the new vocalist of Criss, former Kiss drummer Peter Criss' solo band. Naro accepted this role, and even moved in to live with Peter for some time while they were working together. Though Naro was ultimately not featured as a vocalist on the band's next album, 1994's Cat #1, he co-wrote the songs "Bad People Burn in Hell" and "Blue Moon Over Brooklyn", which both appeared on it, as well as the songs "No, I'm Not Afraid" and "Love for Sale", which he later recorded his own studio versions of in 1999 with a different former Kiss member - guitarist Mark St. John. In the years between that, however, he continued to be active in a wide variety of other projects - first starting with his first solo album, Press Play, released in 1994 under the moniker Naro. Around this same time, he also teamed up with Brighton Rock guitarist John Rogers (who would also become a major collaborator in some of Naro's future projects) for what would go on to become his most longstanding project - The Phil and John Show, an acoustic cover duo featuring Naro on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, and Rogers on lead guitar and backing vocals/occasional lead vocals. The two gigged continuously around bars in the Toronto area for the next 25 years, performing whenever they were not busy with other projects, and eventually put out a studio album of acoustic covers in 2006, titled Cover Art. In 1997, Naro joined short-lived progressive metal band Blood Red Flower and released the album Last Link to the World later that year, and then began to work with Serbian Christian metal guitarist Slav Simanic. Simanic's first solo album, Water of Life, was released in 1998, and though it was primarily an instrumental album, still featured vocals by Naro on the track "Days of Ease" as well as the bonus track "What If, If Only, If I Could". Simanic later released a second solo album in 2002, entitled Let It Go, which featured Naro on vocals for all tracks. Their collaboration together also lead to them working together in the band 24k in 1999, which also served as a temporary reunion between Naro and his former Talas bandmate Billy Sheehan. In addition to this, Naro released his second solo album, Ten Year Tour, in 1999.
24k released their first album in 2000, entitled Pure, after which both Simanic and Sheehan left the band. Naro continued with them, followed by a second titled Bulletproof in 2001, which also featured the addition of John Rogers on keyboards. The band become inactive shortly thereafter, but Naro continued to keep himself busy elsewhere - releasing his third solo album, Glass Mountain, in 2002, and then beginning a collaboration with guitarist Don Mancuso, formerly of the band Black Sheep. Mancuso hired Naro and ex-Foreigner vocalist Lou Gramm to provide vocals on his 2004 solo album D Drive, which soon after turned into an eponymous band featuring Naro as frontman. DDrive became one of Naro's most consistent and long-lasting bands - lasting roughly 17 years (until his death) and releasing two studio albums (Straight up the Middle in 2006 and 3D in 2010), two EPs (Intermission in 2013 and To Live & to Love in 2016), and a live DVD (Live at the Rochester International Jazz Festival in 2014). Despite having this as a primary band commitment, however, Naro did not slow down whatsoever on continuing to join and collaborate with other projects, and instead kept getting busier with more of them. He joined the band Tango Down around 2005 and released the album Take 1, and then around 2008 joined the band Sarasin A.D. and released the album Daggers ~ Lust ~ Disgust. In addition to all this, Naro became quite active with a variety of cover bands during the 2000s - including Balboa (a band that covered songs from the Rocky soundtracks and artists related to that time period), Stranger (a Foreigner tribute band), and perhaps most notably Ozone Baby (a Led Zeppelin tribute band that Naro remained active with through the late 2010s). Ozone Baby proved to be one of Naro's overall more vocally challenging projects, as it required him to sing Robert Plant's vocal parts as faithfully as possible. Though he overall did a good job in this role, he did have to frequently dodge notes in the F5-G5 range in certain songs, and even E5s on occasion.
The 2010s were possibly Naro's busiest decade, with him adding even more bands and projects onto his already heavy musical roster, and putting out more albums than he ever had before. Much of his output during these years involved taking a step away from his usual hard rock stylings, and instead focusing on a variety of progressive rock bands. The most prominent of these was Druckfarben, a '70s progressive rock-inspired band that Naro joined in 2011 and was active with for the rest of the decade, releasing a self-titled studio album 2011, a followup titled Second Sound in 2014, and the live album Artifact in 2013. In this band, he took a much lighter vocal approach than he usually employed in previous bands, and kept himself restrained on grit - the result of which made for a considerable vocal resemblance to Jon Anderson. In 2012, Naro made his album debut with the band King Friday (whom he had joined in 2009), entitled Let the Song Begin, which featured current and former members of '70s prog rock band Crack the Sky in its lineup. He also did a variety of guest work, including providing vocals on the 2014 album Through the Turbulence by Venezuelan progressive rock band Backhand, as well as on the 2015 album Shifting the Equilibrium by New York progressive rock band Unified Past, whom he went on to join as an official member in 2016. Aside from all these progressive rock collaborations however, the 2010s also saw Naro releasing some of his heaviest music to date - most notably with the band Miron, whom he joined and released the album Lacrimosa with in 2015, and with solo guitarist Brian Tarquin, for whom he provided vocals on the 2017 album Band of Brothers. This was a concept album narrating the horrors of war from a soldier's perspective, telling the firsthand stories of American soldiers who had fought in various overseas conflicts. Naro and Tarquin later went on to collaborate again in 2020 on the album Vegas Blue, another concept album - this time focused on telling accounts from the Pulse nightclub shooting in 2016. This album, however, was much more fusion-influenced, straying away from the aggressive metal styles of Band of Brothers. In 2018, Naro also joined progressive rock band Simply They, and put out a concept album called Calendar.
In addition to his various original acts in the 2010s, Naro also continued to be active in cover bands like Ozone Baby and the Phil and John Show, as well as joining two new cover bands - Dreamer, a Supertramp tribute in which he sang Roger Hodgson's vocal parts, and Yessongs, a Yes tribute band. Perhaps the most notable of Naro's involvements in the later 2010s, however, was a reunion with Talas - involving himself, Billy Sheehan, Mark Miller, and now the new addition of guitarist Kine Najdovski serving in the place of Mitch Perry. This reunion was originally intended to just be a one-off concert in 2017, but upon doing so, the members found themselves enjoying it so much that they decided they wished to continue and make it a more prolonged commitment. They later went on to do a small tour of the western New York region in 2019, reprising a number of songs off Sink Your Teeth into That, several of the new songs featured on Live Speed on Ice, and a handful of newer songs that had never been played before. The group then set to work on recording material for a new album, which would make it their first new studio album in over 30 years. However, in early 2020, Naro revealed that he had been diagnosed with tongue cancer and was receiving chemotherapy treatment. Never one to let this slow his work ethic down though, Naro continued to power through this and got all of his vocal parts for the new Talas album done over the course of the next year, as well as completing a new single with DDrive and a number of guest appearances with other artists. Sadly, Naro's cancer was terminal - something he had already known from doctors, but had kept private, and had used as a means to motivate himself to get as much done musically in the remaining time he had. He died on May 3rd, 2021, and was honored and mourned by many of the vast number of musicians he had worked with, and friends and fans from within his community. Billy Sheehan confirmed that the new Talas album would still be released posthumously, however, and in March 2022, the band finally released their first studio track to ever feature him on vocals - a studio version of the song "Inner Mounting Flame", a live version of which was previously heard on 1984's Live Speed on Ice. The band also confirmed that more updates will be on the way soon, which hopefully means that it will only be a matter of time before the finished album sees the light of day!
