John Winston Ono Lennon (October 9, 1940 - December 8, 1980)
Member of: The Beatles (1960-1970), Plastic Ono Band (1969-1974)
Vocal Range: A1-C6
It's almost hard for those of us too young to remember that John Lennon once lived just like the rest of us. Just as John began to see the world from an entirely new perspective, embracing the role of husband and father that he failed to do in his marriage, he was shot and killed. His troubling childhood and adolescence fed into his developing interest in music, which continued to be a sort of therapy for John. While his partner, bandmate and friend, Paul McCartney, utilized his unmatched versatility to set himself apart, John captured an array of emotions in his introspective style of songwriting. Hidden beneath the cold, humorous exterior was a vulnerable man who related to his audience by expressing his anger, sadness, fear, and loneliness. John's oddball interests eventually brought him to meet his wife, Yoko Ono, who would not be intimidated by his tricks, and her experimental edge and continues to challenge the masses. Many of your favorite belters are proud to put John Lennon on their list of favorite singers.
John's vocal style is a direct result of his lack of training. The most distinct quality of his voice is his nasality, which is most clear when he sings in a straight tone. Along with this technique comes some confusion, but make no mistake; if we must label him, baritone is the easy choice. In most of his early performances, John fought through incredible strain to achieve the power and volume that Paul would have to develop in time. John's technique continued to develop into his solo career, with some of his best performances coming along in his period between Mind Games and Walls and Bridges. He has the benefit of being rather difficult to imitate, seeing that doing so is a direct hindrance to your own voice, as John's was to his. Despite this, John managed to keep his voice in-tact despite everything he went through, which is an impressive feat. His style rubs off noticeable on U2's Bono and Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, who took this technique far enough to ruin his voice within a few short years. It's worth noting that John toned it down considerably by the end of his life, where he was perhaps more in his element than ever. His vocal prime is up for debate, but the White Album (1968) period is tough to beat.
