{Spoiler}{Detailed bio}
Though best known as a virtuoso guitar shredder, Nuno Bettencourt is a shockingly talented multi-talented instrumentalist, who in addition to his incredible guitar skills also has demonstrated commendable skills on piano, vocals, and drums over the course of his career. His vocal abilities first became apparent as part of the harmonies in Extreme, the band for which he is best known for his involvement in, and in which his voice is easy to pick out in various backup/call-and-response vocals (perhaps most famously heard in the iconic harmony vocals of the band's #1 hit "More Than Words". However, he also later went on to get involved in a number of other projects in which he handled all vocal duties by himself - thereby putting his singing abilities to the true test. Overall, he proved himself quite capable of serving as a lead vocalist, with a pleasant, vocal timbre that he can dial into a fairly impressive range of different tones with - from gentle, emotive softer singing to raw, gritty rock 'n' roll belting. The majority of his singing is done in his mid range and lower high range, but he also possesses a decently strong, warm low range that he showcases a fair bit in his solo material, in addition to a very pleasant and well-controlled soft falsetto, which he makes a very tasteful use of on certain songs. His biggest weakness as a vocalist, however, has to be his upper fourth octave, as his mixed range frequently seems to hits a hard stop around G♯4 that you'll only ever hear him occasionally push past. While he did manage to demonstrate some pretty strong singing up to A4/B♭4 on some of his albums between 1998 and 2005, those seem to more or less be studio-only occurrences, as he frequently seems to struggle even making it up to G♯4 live, and usually has to hit any notes above that as falsettos, screams, or has to opt out of singing them and either sing them as something lower, or have another band member sing them in his place.
Sources seem to differ about the start of Nuno's career with Extreme - I've read in one place that he started out as the keyboardist/backing vocalist in a short-lived six-piece version of the band, alongside lead vocalist Gary Cherone, drummer Paul Geary, bassist Paul Mangone, and guitarists Peter Hunt and Hal Labeaux. However, other versions of the story seem to state that Nuno was not a founding member of Extreme, and that upon discovering him as a guitarist in 1985, Cherone was so impressed by his playing that he fired both Hunt and Labeaux and had Nuno take both of their places. Either way, the era of Extreme that did not feature Nuno as a guitarist was very short-lived, and he very quickly came into his own with the band and became one of the most attention-drawing members with his wild guitar antics. His role as a vocalist within the band was also carved out from fairly early on, as demos from 1985-1986 already prominently feature three part harmonies between Cherone, Nuno, and Mangone - with Nuno always on the lower harmonies, Mangone on the higher ones, and Cherone either singing a middle part, or singing a lead over the other two or a call-and-response vocal arrangement. In 1986, Mangone left the band and was replaced by Pat Badger, who went on to become the band's most well-known bassist, and also an essential part of their signature vocal harmony sound. The Cherone, Nuno, Badger, and Geary version of Extreme proceeded to become its most classic and iconic lineup, and played on the band's first three albums - Extreme (1989), Pornograffitti, and III Sides to Every Story. All three of these albums (particularly Pornograffitti) were acclaimed by fans, and featured Cherone, Nuno, and Badger's vocal harmonies together as a prominent part of almost every song. They also featured a select songs here and there with lead vocal portions sung by Nuno or duets between Nuno and Cherone, such as "More Than Words", "Watching, Waiting", and "Rise 'n' Shine".
In 1994, during the tracking of Extreme's fourth album, Waiting for the Punchline, Paul Geary made the decision to leave the band, and was replaced by Mike Mangini, later of Dream Theater fame. The album was tracked with playing by both drummers, and featured a significant departure from Extreme's previous sound - instead of the funky, at times progressive song stylings with hooky choruses and heavy vocal harmonies, Waiting for the Punchline was recorded with a very raw, grungey sound, and featured far fewer vocal contributions from Nuno and Badger than usual. It was also around the time of this album that Nuno began to realize he was no longer interested in continuing with Extreme musically, and that he was more interested in pursuing a solo career with full creative control over the music. As a result, it was agreed that after the band's 1996 tour, they would make an amicable split. Soon afterwards, Nuno embarked on his solo career, and released his first album, Schizophonic, simply under the mononym Nuno in 1997. This album demonstrated the full range of Nuno's instrumental abilities, as he performed all guitar, bass, drum, and vocal parts himself, with the exception of two tracks that featured Mangini on drums and another that featured guest vocals by Cherone. Musically, this album bore some resemblances to Waiting for the Punchline, with a very grungey/punk songwriting style, but with the addition of highly complex guitar solos that continued to maintain Nuno's guitar hero status. In addition, this was his first time handling lead vocal duties entirely on his own, and he made a strong demonstration of his skills in that department on it as well, with strong belting up to G♯4 on almost every song, some pleasant and decently resonant lower singing on certain tracks, and an impressive display of vocal dynamics and moods across the album.
Following the release of Schizophonic, Nuno formed a touring band with Mangini on drums, and his nephew Donovan Bettencourt on bass. However, Mangini soon left the band to pursue other projects, and as a result Nuno continued to play drums (in addition to guitar and vocals) on the next album that he recorded with Donovan, which was an eponymous 1998 release under the artist named Mourning Widows. This album showed Nuno continuing in a grungey direction with his music, but also featured some more experimental tracks like "True Love in the Galaxy" and others that featured some funk metal elements. Nuno also audibly began to push his range more around this time, singing entire choruses up to A4 on "Hotel Asylum", and even B♭4s on "All Automatic and "Sex in a Jar". Mourning Widows released a second album, Furnished Souls for Rent, in 2000, featuring Jeff Consi taking over on drums. However, the year after this, the group disbanded, and Nuno returned to recording music entirely by himself on his next album - a once more self-titled album under the project title Population 1, released in 2002 and featuring him on all vocals, guitars, bass, drums, and keyboards. Much like the transition from Nuno to Mourning Widows, however, he then proceeded to fill out the band with other members - this time featuring Steve Ferlazzo on keyboards and backing vocals, Kevin Figueiredo on drums, and Joe Pessia on bass. This version of the band released one EP in 2004, Sessions from Room 4, before changing their name to DramaGods, and releasing the album Love in 2005. Outside of that project, Nuno, Ferlazzo, and Figueiredo went on to team up with Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell to form the band Satellite Party in 2004, and released the album Ultra Payloaded in 2007. This album featured Nuno stepping back to the role of only guitar and backing vocals for the first time in a while, as he had done lead vocals in all of his projects since Extreme.
In 2003, Nuno partook in a "guitar gods"-themed concert called Guitar Wars, alongside Steve Hackett, John Paul Jones, and Paul Gilbert. This show took place at the Hard Rock Cafe in Tokyo, and featured each member playing their own solo set, along with collaborations between several of them, and a "jam" set featuring all four of them. As part of this, Nuno reunited with Gary Cherone, and performed the Extreme songs "More Than Words" and "Hole Hearted". The following year, Nuno, Cherone, and Mangini reunited as Extreme and did a short tour with Satellite Party bassist Carl Restivo filling in for Badger. A couple of other short reunions happened in 2005 (with Nuno, Cherone, Paul Geary, and bassist Laurent Duval), and 2006 (with Nuno, Cherone, Badger, and Geary), before it was announced that the band would be getting back together in 2007, with Nuno, Cherone, and Badger all reprising their previous roles, and Kevin Figueiredo taking over for Geary. This reunion led to Nuno quitting Satellite Party, as he wanted to make Extreme his priority again, and he has also been less active with his other projects ever since. Meanwhile, Extreme has resumed touring regularly, released their fifth studio album Saudades de Rock in 2008, released two live albums, Take Us Alive (2010) and Pornograffitti Live 25 / Metal Meltdown (2016), and is currently getting ready to release a new studio album for the first time in 15 years, simply titled Six.
Outside from his continued work with Extreme, Nuno began playing as the guitarist for pop/R&B singer Rihanna in 2009, and he has served in that role for her ever since. This has continued to elevate his career even almost 25 years into it, as he has performed with her on all sorts of new stages and recorded on three studio albums with her. Aside from that, he has had involvement with a number of other projects from the 2000s onward, such as joining the supergroup Kings of Chaos in 2014, in which he played alongside other famous artists such as Steven Tyler, Billy Gibbons, Robin Zander, Duff McKagan, and Matt Sorum, playing covers of songs by each of their respective bands. In 2016, Nuno partook in another "guitar gods" tour, this time under the project name Generation Axe - featuring him alongside other guitar shredder legends such as Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Zakk Wylde, and Tosin Abasi. This group toured from 2016-2019, and released a live album from their tour of east Asia in 2019, entitled The Guitars That Destroyed the World: Live in China. Nuno has not been quite as active with his solo projects since reuniting with Extreme, but he did write and record several new songs for the soundtrack of the film Smart People in 2008, in addition to having several of his older songs featured on it as well. Outside of that, he has begun hosting a show series called Ultimate Jam Night at Lucky Strike Live! in Los Angeles, California, billed under "Nuno Bettencourt and friends", in which he performs covers with a wide rotation of other musician friends coming in to do guest appearances. The core lineup for these shows often features Steve Ferlazzo on keyboards and backing vocals, Kevin Figueiredo on drums, and Carl Restivo on vocals, and Nuno rotating between guitar, vocals, and occasionally even drums, depending on what roles are being filled by other musicians. He has also had a similar annual concert series going since 2012 entitled the Bettenfest Turkey Jam, which is always hosted at the Hudson Portuguese Club in Massachussetts around Thanksgiving. Much like the Ultimate Jam Night shows, these shows feature Nuno playing covers with a revolving lineup of other musicians, but the key difference is that the Bettenfest shows are largely built around him performing alongside other members of his family, as the Bettencourt family is very large and has many other musicians among it. It's very cool to see the various ways that Nuno comes up with to showcase his wide range of talents, and we all look forward to seeing him do more of it!
