{Vocal Summary}When one thinks of iconic rock singers there are very few who would come before Freddie Mercury. Born Farrokh Bulsara in Stone Town, Zanzibar on September 5th, 1945, Freddie was a gifted pianist and boxer from an early age, but it took a bit more time before he would become comfortable with putting his voice to the test on stage. But after moving to England and starting college, he was off to the races in fronting bands from the early rock college bands Ibex, later known as Wreckage, later he fronted for Sour Milk Sea and next taking over the lead singing for the band Smile, which would later be developed into the iconic band Queen. Freddie’s singing influences were varied and that showed in his earlier work. In particular note was his love of Soul singers of the 1960’s such as Aretha Franklin, hard rock singers like Robert Plant, rock ‘n roll singers like Elvis Presley, or iconic theatre singers such as Judy Garland and especially her daughter Liza Minnelli. His tone and range in his early years were distinctly that of a light tenor, with an ease of singing in full voice up to the upper fourth and early fifth octaves. His falsetto, a staple in Queen’s catalog, was ever present and strong throughout the entire fifth octave. As his voice developed in the 80’s and grew darker and heavier, it too grew in power with his belting range furthering up to the middle fifth octave and his lower range developing a deep near baritone quality. However, due to Freddie’s eventual tragic battle with AIDS, his life was cut short at only age 45. Yet, his last few years of singing, in particular on the albums “Barcelona” and “Innuendo” show Freddie’s voice at both its thinnest, but most impressive. Easily belting out various fifth octave notes in Full Voice thanks to help from being trained by famous opera Soprano, “Montserrat Caballé”. In the end, Freddie Mercury stands as one of the most iconic figures in the rock world, his influence remaining strong even decades after his death, with his incredible versatility, pitch control, and emotionally powerful and resonant voice being loved the world over.

{Vocal Summary}The bar by which most other rock singers are measured, Freddie Mercury's powerful voice and one-of-a-kind stage presence have become part and parcel of the definition of "great singing", whether or not you agree with that assessment. Possessing a vocal range approaching or equaling four octaves (depending on who you ask), Mercury's vocal approach was heavily inspired by soul singers of the 1960s, particularly Aretha Franklin. His belting chops combined with excellent control over his pitch and dynamics made him a tour de force in the rock world, one of the genre's most versatile singers to date. Mercury is also a great example of someone whose singing noticeably improved over time: his weaker '70s voice strengthened and beefed itself up during the 1980s, and his final full album with Queen, 1991's Innuendo, is widely considered to have some of his best vocals despite being recorded during Mercury's eventually-fatal battle with AIDS. The mythos surrounding Freddie Mercury has in some ways exceeded the greatness of the actual man, but nevertheless, he still remains a unique figure in the history of popular music, and he is indubitably one of the most influential singers of the last 50 years.
